Unconventional 3-D Art Exhibit Slought Foundation 4017 Walnut Street Through Nov. 11, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Free (215) 746-4239 http://www.slought.org
A wise man once asked the question, "What is art?" I responded, "Hell if I know. You are the wise man." For those of you more willing to ponder the age-old question, visit the Slought Foundation for a 3-D art exhibit deemed "unconventional." Maybe they decided to call it "unconventional" so you'd be duped into staring at old vases. Or maybe they discovered some new and crazy 7th Dimension art where if you look at it too long you disappear. You go first.
Brilliant: Navajo Eyedazzler and Germantown Textiles Sedgwick Cultural Center 7137 Germantown Ave. Through Dec. 24, Weekdays 1-9 p.m.,Saturdays 1-5 p.m. (215) 248-9229
If my first grade memory serves me correctly, I don't believe there were Navajo Indians in Germantown PA. But I was so jacked up on snorting fun dip, I didn't know what was going on. Nonetheless, I really feel like the Sedgwick Cultural Center is running out of ideas. Instead of keeping all those textiles and eyedazzlers, they really should donate them to the bums of Philadelphia. A simple card with the flowery note, I come in peace, and some feathers should be appropriate enough.
Cities Without Citizens Rosenbach Museum and Library 2010 Delancey Place Saturday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., Free (215) 732-1600
Hey, is this even possible? Cities without citizens is like a sorority girl without a Prada bag. Mutually exclusive indeed. Since when did the Rosenbach decide they were going to rewrite the laws of demographics? Oh, I get it, it's somehow like we're all involved in an alienated loyalty to each other as a cause of our postmodern evolutionary thinking, even though we all congregate in the same location. I mean, what? Well, it's not my fault Bush is ruining our country. Just in the mood to offend a few conservatives, and perhaps initiate some riots. Wave your flags, patriots.
20th Century Jewish Art and Photographs Philadelphia Museum of Judaica at Rodeph Shalom 615 N. Broad Street Sun, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Free (215) 627-6747 http://www.rodephshalom.org/museum.html
If you are at Penn you have about a 30% chance of being Jewish. So, for every person reading this, there's a damn fine chance that you can connect to the culture and the history of your ancestors and contemporary fellow Jews presented here at this museum. Like Walter said in the Big Lebowski, "5000 years of proud history from Moses to Koufax you're goddamn right I'm living in the past." And as you know, I don't roll on Shabas. Luckily, it's Sunday and so it's okay to go bowling or enjoy culture.
Barbara Ess: I am not this body Goldie Paley Gallery 20th Street and the Parkway Sun., 12 a.m. - 4 p.m., Free (215) 965-4027
Out-of-body experiences, spaceships, and rotting carcasses are not likely to be displayed at this gallery. Just a hunch, but art might be the word of the day for Goldie Paley. Ess's exhibit is sure to delight, amaze, and confuse all you crazy kids tripping on your 'shrooms. Whether it be a thousand snakes coming out of a chair, or simply a bunch of nude self-portraits of the artist, it's sure to be a good time.
