Old City’s boutique Reward Project is a welcome escape to the world of high-end shopping. by Shelby Rachleff

Hidden amongst the galleries and bars of N. 2nd Street, Reward Project is a boutique filled with a variety of chic clothes appropriate for the modern, fashion-conscious buyer.

Reward Project is the creation of Shari Roulin, former senior buyer of women’s apparel at Urban Outfitters. The brands she presents here are reminiscent of Urban’s alternative style, but tend to be slightly pricier (printed tees and oversized knits run around $48–$200, and dresses start at $165) and more unique — perhaps a function of Roulin’s decision to buy mainly international brands. Notable pieces include a cerulean blue velvet and lace mini-dress from Danish brand Numph and a scoop-neck, asymmetrical grey long-sleeved tee from Japanese brand Black Crane. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual, throw-on-with-a-bandeau top, or are looking for something to wear to a dinner downtown (like the dresses by Canadian brand Complex Geometries), Reward Project has it. Even the most discerning SoHo shopping aficionados will be able to find something worth wearing.

The store itself is Old City sleek, with hardwood floors and cream-colored walls neatly lined with racks of hanging clothing. Skinny jeans and accessories on square tables in the center of the boutique create an upscale — rather than cluttered — feel. It’s well-priced, it’s well-lit, and the salespeople actually tell you if the clothes are unflattering.

Bottom line: next time you feel the urge to hit up ShopBop, resist and use that saved shipping and handling fee for a little trip on SEPTA. You definitely won’t regret it.
