On Wednesday, Dec. 6, 34th Street Magazine will publish our last issue of the semester: “End the Silence: Assault Survivors at Penn Share Their Stories.” Our print issue will be entirely comprised of assault survivors at Penn and their testimonies. Some are narratives, some are poems, and all are written by survivors.

I did it guys. I did the one, singular thing you're not supposed to do during the fall/winter season. I got the flu.

I couldn't help myself but scoff when President Gutmann began her speech at the Campus Conversation by thanking students for attending and being “a part of the community.” The irony, of course, was that she spoke these words to an auditorium devoid of nearly any students. Only about one hundred students were in attendance—abysmal for a campus of 10,000 undergrads. After Dr. Gutmann opened, she and Provost Pritchett were interviewed by UA President Michelle Xu. Next came a panel with two Psychiatry professors, Reverend Chaz Howard and Dr. Angela Duckworth. And finally, students were invited to participate in several small group discussions where they could air their grievances, which would purportedly be shared with the administration.

After just the right number of pizza slices, “sick”–but–actually–hungover emails to professors, breakdowns in Huntsman, and midnight talk sessions with your roommate, your first year is over in the blink of an eye. Summer comes and goes, and sophomore year awaits.

Housing may be the worst part of faux–dulting at Penn. We test ourselves every fall as we prepare to scramble and sign leases before the end of the (calendar) year. Highbrow proposes a drinking game to make the housing search a bit more enjoyable.

You check your phone on Saturday morning to see a 2–minute long snapstory where that girl you worked with on a project once last semester is now loudly shouting the lyrics to "Promiscuous" in a dark room, filled with faces you maybe recognize. You know she didn't post her tone–deaf rendition of Nelly Furtado sober. She's probably blacked out.

And here we are. This is my last letter as 34th Street Magazine's Editor–in–Chief. Well, okay, not exactly. I'll still technically have my fancy title until the end of December. But this time next week, there will be a new Editor–in–Chief, announced and set and ready to go, chomping at the bit to continue (or undo) what I've done.

Ok, fine —we cheated a bit. Max Levy's claim to fame may be a little less Penn-centric than that of our standard Ego of the Week, but holy Mozart is he impressive. This ZBT bro has been performing in the company of Opera Philadelphia for nearly two years, balancing a burgeoning operatic career with a packed schedule of classes and activities on campus. This summer, he'll be performing with the renowned Glimmerglass Festival. It's safe to say Max will be singing his face off for years to come - but for now, he's still trying to make the most of his last year at Penn.

Putting on the jersey was the easy part. Sliding my arms into its tight sleeves, pulling my head through the embroidered collar, tugging at the corners so the small, red Nike symbol sat right above my sports bra line— that was the best part of my week, the thing I began looking forward to from the moment I stepped off the court on Saturday night. As the the meshy blue fabric slid over my skin, I wasn’t me anymore. I could do things I couldn’t normally do—run faster, reach lower, hit harder. I was untouchable.

It's 6 p.m. and the dogs chase each other, frolicking across the field. The owners watch from a distance and laugh as the dogs scamper by with flopping tongues.

Each Wednesday from May to November, the corner of 34th and Walnut streets transforms into an oasis of local goods, including a stand run by Andy O’Neill of Big Sky Bread Company. If you’re looking for their stand on Wednesday, follow the aroma of oven–crisp breads and sweet pastries. You’ll soon see the smiling face of Andy O’Neill and a long line of waiting students. Big Sky Bread Co. travels to Penn from North Wilmington, Delaware. Luckily for us, their cookies also make the trip.

Early in the evening on a Thursday night, you observe a pair of people walking together down Locust. Both are dressed up semi–formal, somewhere between going to Grandma’s and flying out for a Superday. Their demeanor and gait are confusing: are they drunk, nervous, or even both? To the untrained eye, it's hard to tell. Here are some surefire ways to tell if your peers are going to a networking event or heading out to a date night.

How you spend the five–minute break in the middle of your three–hour seminar reveals quite a bit about you. Highbrow's got you all figured out. If you're too swamped with midterms to spare time for introspection, here's a quick guide.

Halloween has been over for a little more than a week, so obviously that means that winter is fully upon us. With winter inevitably comes illness, especially when the cold weather is coupled with midterms, DFMOs, and ambitious Homecoming plans. Accept it: you will get sick. Follow Street's DIY to fight back.

There are more than 650 clubs on campus, which means there’s really a club for anything. Not all are SAC funded, which involves a two–year waiting period after a club’s inception, but even without university funding, many of these groups have been colonizing and growing. To start a group at Penn, all you really have to do is log on to Groups Online at Penn and register. After an administrator reviews your application, you’re in. Sounds too good to be true, huh?
