Memory works in a funny way. I struggle to remember the details of notable events in my life, but can recall any number of insignificant things—specific instances of pretending to figure skate on frozen puddles, reading through baby name books before playing with Barbies so that they weren’t always named “Lizzie,” and the color of Keenan Ryan’s turtleneck when we ended up in the same ski school group in third grade. It was white.

I was first exposed to the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) program almost ten years ago. As much as I wish I could say it was because I witnessed an inspiring connection between a Big and a Little, it was really because the secondary love interest for Katherine Heigl in the 2008 film 27 Dresses had a Little. He was used for a few plot points.

Penn bills itself as a research university, but what does that actually mean? Not what you'd think. Read on and have your mind blown.

The name "Kat McKay," floods in the inbox of every single one of Penn’s undergrad students. If it doesn’t ring a bell, you should go back and click through old emails, because every message sent out with her sign–off as President of the Undergraduate Assembly is directly related to the UA’s efforts to make Penn a better place for students.

While one might say Hamco, the Radian and all things Campus Apartments are "off–campus," some fellow Quakers have gone above and beyond—literally. These students actually live off–campus, stepping outside of the physical barriers of the Penn Bubble and into Philly proper. From South Philly to Center City, read what they have to say about life outside of Penn's boundaries.

The Button is one of the few spots at Penn that allows you to run into any particular Penn subculture or Philly personality at a given time. I camped out a bench by the Button for a few hours and collected a few observations that seem to sum up a lot of what makes Penn, Penn.

“So, little–known fact, I’m still on the meal plan,” a slightly shameful Darren Tomasso proclaimed as he began to describe the demanding task that is eating, “and not just like dining dollars, like the actual swipes.” Ever since his sophomore year of high school, Darren’s been heavily dedicated to fitness and strength training, so the average “seven plates of food” he consumes each meal is really only economically feasible with the swipe system.

“I guess he didn’t want to ask for my number, so the only way that I knew him was on Instagram," Zahraa Mohammed (C'19) said. "We followed each other, and so he DM’d me and was like, 'Hey, I don’t really have your number, but I was wondering if you could iMessage me—like, not even text me—and I was like, 'Oh, I don’t have an iPhone.' And he was like, ‘Oh, I don’t have text messaging,’ so then we started talking on WhatsApp."

Getting back to the states is rarely easy after a semester filled
with super cheap intra–Europe air travel, a lower drinking age, plentiful beaches and
hopefully easy As. Alas, study abroad
always comes to an end, leaving students in the harsh American
sunlight with only their stories from the past semester and Instagram posts of that
wall in Spain to comfort them. Read on
to hear how some of your fellow Quakers are handling the transition.

“I remember attempting to tell them what SABSing is and just being met with blank stares,” laughs Lauren Kahn (C' 19) as she talks about trying to relate to her high school friends. The unique Penn terminology she regularly uses is one of the many ways our school's culture impacts the lives and personalities of its students. When students return home for breaks, these "new" personalities are juxtaposed with the familiarity of home. Below, we speak to students with different opinions as to how well the two selves mesh.
