Dina Ley (E ‘23) fell in love with photography while immersed in the shadows of the dark room at age 12. Her best friend at the time had convinced her to take a film photography course at the Center for the Arts in Pittsburgh, Dina’s hometown, and her life hasn’t been the same since.

Nearly every Penn student and alumni could tell you a story about an incredible night that ended at Allegro. I had the honor of spending a day at the oldest pizzeria in University City, which is an indispensable part of the Penn experience. Whether you are stumbling in for a slice of pepperoni at 2am on a Friday or nursing a hangover with your heavenly pancakes on a Sunday morning, can you truly call yourself a Penn student if you haven’t taken one, or many, trips to Allegro?

Rebecca Waller, the Director of the EDEN (Emotion, Development, Environment, & Neurogenetics) Lab, began her career as a high school science teacher in a public high school in London. The current Penn assistant professor never imagined that she would move to the United States, let alone lead her own lab group at Penn. Yet her never–ending fight for the welfare of children and families has brought her here.

“What does it mean that I’m a white person who was born in a small wealthy seacoast town in New Hampshire, moved to Philadelphia 25 years ago, and now is a parent of two kids in the public school district in the school that’s subsidized by Penn?” Professor Amy Hillier’s determination to constantly question her position as a tenured white female cis-gender professor at Penn is a guiding force through her life.

“It is so important to understand positions that you don’t agree with. If you don’t understand them, you can’t argue against them. That’s something that I really emphasize in my classes...trying to see both sides of something and fleshing out the reasonable contours of all these different debates,” Professor of Sociology Chenoa Flippen reflects.

“I remember walking home from the Hill,” Olivia Troye (C’99) says. “I remember walking home past the Pentagon while it was still on fire.”

“I was in my apartment, getting ready to head to the rally of Count Every Vote,” Sarah Min (GSE ‘16/SP2 ‘20) details the moment she heard the results of the U.S. presidential election. “All of a sudden, my phone is blowing up. All my personal friend chats, my community organizing chats—and then I started getting back–to–back FaceTime calls, just being stunned and celebratory and literally crying on the phone with friends.”

During the dog days of Joe Biden's presidential campaign, Street spoke separately with Seth Schuster and Samantha Delman, two employees on tasked with communicating the now–President–elect's mission and getting voters to the polls. Both described their motivation to work for Biden, experience throughout the campaign, and belief in his ability to heal our nation during this tumultuous time.

When I first set out to learn about the Penn experience with virtual tutoring this semester, I expected to hear about another dimension of the disconnect and shortcomings of remote learning. I had had a week which culminated in a repugnant screen time update and disdain for Zoom, Canvas, and any remote learning platform. I thought that perhaps the reality of being a student, or simply a person, in 2020 would mean a decrease in Penn students caring about their courses or using Penn’s resources. While the first year of virtual tutoring has come with difficulties, my conversations about Penn’s online tutoring world rather highlighted the resilience, collaboration, and creativity of our entire community.

September 20, 2019. Xiye Bastida (C '24) expected 18,000 people, maybe, at most. Instead, she found hundreds of thousands walking alongside her down Wall Street, rallying for climate change and chanting something along the lines of “Wall Street, Wall Street, we see your lies!”

Smiling fondly, Penn alumnus Ted Koutsoubas (C ‘12) recalls his experience handing out fliers from his booth on Locust Walk and campaigning door–to–door on campus for a Pennsylvania senatorial campaign. That was 2010. A decade later, the former member of PennDems has pursued his passion for politics and currently holds a position as political advisor at a Washington–based government relations firm where he specializes in the administration of the Medicaid program in state governments.

The cozy, cosmopolitan atmosphere of her apartment in Philadelphia is a far cry from the wave-soaked sand of the Jersey Shore, but that hasn’t stopped Emily Grossarth (C/W ’24) from pursuing her passion for surfing at Penn.

“Forming relationships with these children is by far the most rewarding part. It’s such an amazing feeling when you realize how excited they are to see you every week, or when you miss a week and they notice and ask where you were...to learn about their lives, talk to them, and build relationships with them,” Olivia Francella (W ‘23) reflects upon her involvement in the organization Young Quakers.

Wondering how Penn’s unofficial alma mater 'Red and Blue' would sound if it was written by different composers? Look no further than PennCompose, the club founded by first–year Anthony Hu (C ’24) that has created a community of music composers who meet weekly to share pieces, complete musical challenges, and talk about anything related to music.
