1. Hannah: Hannah has been accepted into graduate school for writing. It’s sweet how surprised she was by it and how happy it made both her and her parents. This is Hannah doing something constructive for herself and that is rewarding to see after watching her flounder for so long. However the heartbreak written on Adam’s face when she breaks the news to him that the program is in Iowa is devastating.
2. Marnie: She’s still chasing a music career she probably won’t have and a man she probably can’t have. Marnie saw the least character development this season and every time we come back to her we’re reminded of how immature she truly is.
3. Shosh: This was Shosh’s year of freedom, to take charge and figure her life out. She crashed hard. As the youngest member of the girls, she was supposed to be graduating this year, but she ended up failing a class and was left three credits short. This and Marnie’s confession of having slept with Ray sets her off, and she realizes how destructive her year has been. She reaches out to Ray, begging to get back together. She’s desperately searching for some stability and familiarity—but Ray turns her down and poor Shosh falls into tears.
4. Jessa: Jessa, unsurprisingly, has been all over the map—but this episode saw her as a functioning and compassionate human; it was refreshing and a pleasure. Of course, though, functioning and compassionate for Jessa means aiding an old woman commit suicide and then rushing to call 911 when the woman changes her mind, but we’d never want to see Jessa doing anything too normal any way!
5. Final thoughts: This season was disjointed, the girls are all in such different places that they hardly shared any screen time. And it was their interactions that made the show so fantastic in the first two seasons. Maybe it hurts more because it’s so easy to see their falling out happen with our own college friends—but it’s Hannah–centric themes (however realistic it might be for the progression of Hannah’s life) left the season unable to reach the highs of seasons past.

1. Hannah’s grandmother is dying: The episode opens with a phone call from Hannah’s mother: “Grandma’s going to die.” She urges Hannah to come to the hospital to say goodbye. There we meet Hannah’s extended family and her grandmother’s hospital bed is suddenly wall to wall with crazy women.
2. The aunts: Hannah’s two aunts are actually insane. Watching their family dynamic helps us understand Hannah a lot better, and by comparison she may come off as the best. The three sisters are constantly bickering and making stabs at each other’s lives. Before their mother is even dead, they have divided up her pills and are post–it noting which possessions they want.
3. Cousin Rebecca: Rebecca is a high strung med student still holding some childhood grudges against Hannah. Their personalities clash almost as strongly as their mothers’ and the unease between them is tangible. Rebecca and Hannah continue to argue as they drive back to the hospital and it ultimately results in Rebecca hitting a parked car. Both sustain only minor injuries but Adam has rushed from the city to make sure Hannah is alright. Their interaction is the first redeeming relationship seen all episode and serves as a tension release.
4. Hannah and Adam get engaged: Well not really. Earlier Hannah’s mother prompted Hannah to lie to her grandma and say that she and Adam were getting married— a way to make a dying woman happy. Hannah mentioned this to Adam but the conversation turned south and was dropped. When Adam comes to the hospital for Hannah he decides to tell her grandma they are engaged. Hannah’s mother thanks them for the lie but once Adam leaves, she tells Hannah not to settle for an “odd man,” clearly thinking about her own marriage to Hannah’s father.
5. Hannah’s grandmother is dead: The episode ends with a phone call from Hannah’s cousin: “Grandma’s dead.” Hannah had returned to the city that morning thinking her grandma was going to be fine; when she gets the bad news she is immediately in denial about it.
Final Thoughts: By the end of the episode it seemed that Hannah’s grandma had gotten better and perhaps so had the relationships between the family. This is, as most good things on “GIRLS” are, short lived. How Hannah deals with this development remains to be seen—but we’re sure it’s going to be dramatic

1. Adam gets cast in a Broadway play: Adam’s acting has improved a decent amount this season, seemingly leading to this big news—he has landed a role in the revival of Major Barbara. Adam’s excitement is adorable and reminds us why he managed to win us over. He’s come a long way from the first season.
2. Patti LuPone gives Hannah relationship advice: Hannah’s latest assignment has her writing an interview with Patti LuPone that is sponsored by a medicine for low bone density, despite the fact that Patti does not suffer from Osteoporosis. They find a way around this by blatantly lying in the article and stating that Patti suffers from the disease. During the interview, Hannah gets Adam’s good news, and Patti proceeds to egregiously warn Hanna about the “dangers” of the Broadway scene Adam is entering. And by dangers, she means him fucking all of his castmates. Okay Patti. This leaves Hannah on edge for the rest of the episode.
3. Marnie: She eats pizza, still uses AOL, is dumped by Ray (you go Ray!) and is as dramatic as ever as she declares “Was this your plan the whole time, Ray? To humiliate the girl you couldn’t get in high school?” Sure, Marnie, sure it was.
4. Jessa goes off the deep end: Which, admittedly, is saying a lot for Jessa. Her life has become trivial and she doesn’t know how to deal with that. She’s bored out of her mind and her wish for excitement is answered in the form of Jasper, the man she met in rehab. She tries to resist him, with half–hearted claims of living a healthy, happy life— but she’s an addict and her protests only go so far. By the end of the episode she’s high on cocaine and stealing money from the baby boutique where she works. And Jasper is grabbing her tit as they snort coke. Oh Jessa, no.
5. Hannah is growing?: She gets her first paycheck from GQ and is amazed to find out it’s more than her rent. She uses some of that extra cash to buy a dress she spots in a window; she looks nice, she seems confident. Sure, she spends the majority of the episode selfishly worrying over how Broadway is going to change Adam—but the final scene is the two of them together in the bath, happy and in love. It’s refreshing to end an episode with Hannah not hovering on or near the “worst human in the universe” signifier.
Final thoughts: Things are going too well for Hannah and Adam. Between Hannah’s advertorial position and her anxieties over Adam’s new job, it’s only a matter of time before they are set off balance again—but for now it’s sweet. Jessa is getting ready to crash hard, and with everyone else’s self–absorption, it will be interesting to see how the crew comes together to try and help her.

1. Marnie hosts the girls at a beach house: Everyone has noticed the disconnect between the girls this season, even Marnie. As a way to take control, Marnie invites the others on a sort of grown–up retreat for the weekend, with scheduled healing time that is totally sure to fix all of their deeply rooted issues.
2. Hannah refuses to wear anything but a teal bikini: About five minutes into the episode Hannah has thrown her swimsuit on and there is no looking back. It’s a bit of a throwback to the yellow mesh top of seasons past and it is equal parts fantastic and awkward.
3. Elijah is back, with fabulous friends: And who does Hannah run into in town but her gay ex–boyfriend? As the one who “started” the rift between Hannah and Marnie when he slept with Marnie, Elijah is back. He too is having a “girls” weekend with a crew of Broadway men. Hannah invites the gents over to diffuse the tension between herself and Marnie. Marnie is, of course, upset that her weekend isn’t going exactly as planned.
4. Drunken conversations: There are a lot of painful drunken conversations this weekend. Most of them hurt because they likely resonate with our lives, and any time we see a hint of ourselves in “GIRLS” it just makes everyone sad.
5. Shosh kills it: As with all dysfunctional gatherings this one soon dissolves into arguments and Shoshanna comes out the clear winner. Her own life is far from perfect or praiseworthy but she calls Hannah, Marnie and Jessa out individually for why they all are the actual worst.
So far, the season had been floating, but the climax of this episode finally got it moving in a direction. Here’s hoping the downward spiral that is sure to continue is worth the buildup.

1. David had a wife—Yes, dearly departed, blatantly gay David had a wife. Hannah attends his memorial service and is shocked to find out he had a wife. Hannah deals with this new information the way you would expect her to, she is selfish and tactless—eventually asking David’s widow for a new publisher when she finds out all of David’s projects have been dropped.
2. Marnie visits Ray—As Hannah’s attention is focused on her own problems, Marnie is feeling rather neglected. Sick of brooding on her own, she pays a visit to Ray. It’s almost sweet at first—Ray calls Marnie out for, well, for being her—but still supports her. And then they have sex on the table because that’s how these things go. And then Marnie, in typical Marnie fashion, tells Ray, “Go fuck yourself. Like I’d advertise this,” when Ray suggests they keep their little rendezvous on the DL. It’s not like he’s trying to spare the feelings of their mutual friend Shoshanna or anything!
3. Hannah wears a gecko crop top—So maybe it’s more of a child’s shirt that turns into a crop top on Hannah but it leaves little to the imagination. Every time the scene cut to Hannah the only possible thought was “The crop top though . . .” and left you wondering if Hannah even owns a bra (she definitely just doesn’t).
4. Hannah kicks Caroline out—After an earlier scene where Hannah stresses the importance of siblings, declaring that that was all she ever wanted growing up (it’s okay if you don’t remember it that well—because crop top), she reaches her breaking point and kicks Caroline out. Hannah just found out that David’s office owns the rights to her book for three years, despite the fact that they won’t be publishing it. This shatters Hannah’s world, leaving her unable to consider anyone else’s struggles. Adam is furious to find Caroline gone when he returns home for the night and walks out on an uncommunicative Hannah.
5. Final thoughts—The show still isn’t “GIRLS” right now, it’s HANNAH. The amount of time we’ve been spending with Hannah is making it harder and harder to deal with her or find sympathy to her. Marnie gets her own small story line, but Shosh and Jessa are blips in the episode. Spending time away from all of the girls is creating a disjointed feeling around the show. Here’s hoping it’s meant to mirror Hannah’s life, and that when her life finally fully falls apart, it will be dragging all of the girls back into it.

1. We meet Adam’s sister – Caroline shows up in a whirlwind, having just been kicked out by her boyfriend. She is homeless, jobless, and penniless. Hannah, in all her glory of feeling mentally and financially sound (re: season 2), is ready to offer Caroline the spare bedroom in their apartment, to which Adam vehemently protests. Hannah heeds Adam’s warning but still invites Caroline to join the group for the evening. Sure she acts strange, but it’s strictly “GIRLS” strange until the evening culminates with Caroline breaking into Hannah and Adam’s apartment to be found standing half–naked in the bathroom and crushing a glass in her hand.

Sacha Gervasi’s “Hitchcock” is the latest installment in a string of films that flirt with Hollywood nostalgia and the golden age of cinema. It is a biopic centered on The Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, as he rides on the success of his latest film “North–by–Northwest” while struggling to remain in control of his marriage and career as he embarks on the making of “Psycho.”
