“As a conductor, you’re responsible to teach the students or teach the orchestra what you want to express, so you’re really at the mercy of the instrumentalists, your orchestra,” Thomas Hong says. “How do you convince them? How do you challenge them and motivate them without turning them off? That’s the challenge of being a conductor. You don’t have your own voice. You’re mute. You have to sort of help them to allow you to speak.”

On Saturday, October 27th, one of the greatest acts of anti–Semitism in American history occurred in Pittsburgh at the Tree of Life Synagogue, where eleven Jews were killed while they were observing Shabbat. The three co–presidents of Penn Hillel, Jeremy Wilson (C ’19), Jennifer Reiss (C ’19), and Samantha Brooks (W ’19) share their perspectives on the tragedy and how they plan to unite the Jewish community and the Penn community at large in the wake of this act of hate.

While most of us are used to seeing political debates in Washington D.C., last month, Houston Hall acted as a political forum where both Richard Murphy (C ‘19), executive director and acting president of College Republicans, and Dylan Milligan (W ‘20), president of Penn Democrats, met to discuss the 2018 midterm elections.

David Gordon (C ‘19) didn’t always plan to double major in biology and architecture. When he entered Penn, he knew he was interested in architecture and liked how the design curriculum was taught in a liberal arts context, but also recognized that he had a “science brain.” He hoped that taking classes in both fields would allow him to come to a decision. “And here I am now, still doing both,” David says.

While Gizem Saka’s students may know her for her expertise in economics, many would be surprised to learn of the Wharton professor’s impressive past as a national gymnastics champion and exhibition artist.

Aggrey Odera never would have anticipated that he’d be studying in the US, let alone that he’d be majoring in philosophy. Between his early morning swims and his late–night reading sessions, Street was able to catch up with this Penn senior and hear all about his past four years.

I met Moksh Jawa (W, E ‘21) on a Saturday afternoon right after his meeting with his teammates from HCMG–391 on Healthcare Entrepreneurship. Though he knew nothing about health care prior to enrolling in the course and didn’t have to take the class for any requirements, he was simply interested in learning more about the industry. He said, “Everyone else in the class is very experienced in healthcare. For me, it’s more about getting some experience on something that I didn’t know about.”

Charlotte Le’s (W’22) passion project might be one you’re familiar with—we’ve probably scrolled through Instagram videos of these satisfying phenomena yet never thought too much about the business behind them. Her work has made Charlotte, in her native country of Vietnam, a social media sensation and a tycoon in the field of slime.

It’s hard to miss green–haired Keri Zhang (C ‘21) carrying a hefty scooter to travel back and forth on campus. Being an active member in two arts and performing troupes, she needs to frequently visit the PAC shop on 41st and Walnut, and the 20–minute walk can be exhausting. Her impeccably fashionable style—graphite–green, second–hand, extra–large fur jacket, green blouse imprinted with pink lotus flowers, and neon orange pants—compromises functionality, and yet she doesn’t feel bothered.

Penn Beekeeping Club co–presidents Abhi Motgi (W ‘20) and Joost Vanderborgh (C ‘21) are passionate about bees. But as of late, they're leading a beekeeping club that has no bees.

From the outside, it appears to be a typical house—chairs on the deck giving it a comfortable feeling, until a knock on the door breaks the silence, spurring a succession of eager barking. A chewed–up dog toy lies out on the rug in the living room. Some dog food sits in a pouch on the side table. Maui, a hybrid Golden Retriever and Labrador who regularly turns heads on the sidewalk, treads across the room, wagging her tail excitedly. But Maui is no pet, as Malia Szyman (N '20) will tell you.

A senior in the LSM program and former President of Penn’s Kite and Key Society, Ryan Leone is always finding new ways to get involved at Penn. When he’s not out at pop punk concerts or perfecting his newest magic trick, you’ll find him working hard towards his goal of becoming a physician for the US Army or eating in one of Penn's dining halls (yes, he is still on the dining plan).

My hand was cramping, Locust Walk seemed a mile long, and I was completely overwhelmed by the bustling, two–hour–long whirlwind of a clubs fair. In hindsight, I really should’ve brought that tote bag. While I had heard of how prominent business clubs were on Penn’s campus, I was still struck by the sheer number of booths. Although I wasn’t involved in business in high school, I found myself nodding along to suit–clad speakers and letting people press yet another flier in my hand. It was all very novel.

Enter Irvine Auditorium, look for the most run–down elevator you can find, go up to the fourth floor, and keep walking left until you hear the sounds of sweet jazz and rambunctious laughter: that’s where you’ll find the West Philly Swingers every Tuesday during their weekly social dancing. Recognized as Penn’s official swing dance troupe, the West Philly Swingers continue to share their passion for the timeless style of swing dance with Penn’s students and beyond.

When KC Miller (W, N ‘23) walked into Houston Market in his boyfriend’s blue Villanova hoodie and a heavy healthcare system textbook in his arm, he looked tired. In addition to two exams and one paper that he had to study for that week, he had just been interviewed by Cosmopolitan magazine for a feature in its upcoming December issue focusing on sex education in the United States. The week had exhausted him, but as soon as KC began talking about his advocacy work in revamping sex education, his energy was quickly recovered.
