Annabelle Williams is a writer. But just about everyone else in her life came to realize that before she did. To Annabelle’s father, she was the “most adult child” he had ever met, constantly clinging to books and absorbing bits of new information. Annabelle’s mother wrote about her “unquenchable desire to read, at all times, in all circumstances.” (She also shared a picture of young Annabelle hula–hooping while reading The Iliad). It’s a mystery how she started out as a Wharton student, when Annabelle has been a writer since she was 12 years old.

I am 11, sitting on my father’s duvet, eating pieces of greasy popcorn, and watching American Idol with him. I’m anxious about the algebra test I have to take in a few days, convinced that I will fail even though I have been studying for hours. I redo problems in my head, repeating the associative, commutative, and distributive laws.

A nightly 8 p.m. alarm, a text from your mom, a reminder on your phone, or your roommate taking her pill. No matter what tracking method you use, remembering to take your birth control and refill your prescription can be a pain.

Sick moves performed by enthusiastic kids to the cadence of popular beats. Vibrant stage lights. Pounding music. Chaos rings through Iron Gate Theatre, and the passion for dance CityStep inspires in students from West and South Philadelphia becomes clear within five minutes of my visit to their dress rehearsal.

You might know the Signal from Squirrels Without Morality, or you you might know it from the Amazon case competition the club organized in September. Or maybe you’ve read its spotlight articles on Penn alumni pursuing alternative career paths. Regardless, the Signal is taking a hammer to Penn’s pre–professional culture one project at a time. This student group was built to "encourage the exploration of unconventional career paths and creative passions at Penn."

Patricia Jia (C '18) is an extroverted pop culture aficionado with an impeccable memory. She’s a world traveler, church group leader, Percy Jackson lover, and rap music expert who takes about 30,000 photos a year. She’s also a Penn senior who will appear on the Jeopardy! college championship this Friday at 7 p.m.

Hayley Kiyoko has been called “Lesbian Jesus.” The former Disney actress and current rising pop star’s success has gained much attention from the press, in part because of her identity. She’s a queer woman of color in an industry that lacks diversity. And, her new album, “Expectations,” is coming out on March 30th—you can’t miss it.

At the corner of 8th and Christian Streets, you can catch some delicious late–night noms from Tres Jalapenos after the majority of Philadelphia has turned in. When I visit, though, it’s 12:00 p.m. Most of the tables, decorated with colorful serapes, are empty. Although it’s not much of a lunch spot, I’m drawn in by the menu. It offers a variety of options from jumbo quesadillas to burritos stuffed with beans and meat (or vegetables, if you’re vegetarian).

In a society that often asks women to choose between motherhood and a promising professional life, pregnancy gave Ella Vos the strength to launch her music career. And a kickass one at that.

When I was 15, I was scouted by a modeling agency. Not for my beauty, but instead because I looked young for my age and was more mature than the 12–year–olds I’d be competing against for space in Gap Kids ads. Until my dad shook some sense into me, I was ready to give up six hours every weekend to attend casting calls just so I could be on a Lands’ End billboard.

The Qdoba Mexican Eats on 40th Street recently closed for remodeling. Outside of the restaurant, employees are offering coupons announcing the closure and offering buy–one, get–one–free entrees. A sign on the door of the restaurant, located at 40th and Locust Street, announced the temporary closure but did not specify when it would reopen.

Every winter, hundreds of freshman girls zip up their coats and rush the eight Panhellenic sororities at Penn. Isabella Simonetti (C '21), who is also a columnist for the Daily Pennsylvanian, was one of these freshmen. She wrote about her week of sorority rush for Street.

I’ve had the same problem since I was ten.

Each year, the blistering mid–August heat beckons a new class of Penn students. Hordes of freshmen rush to meet roommates, plug in refrigerators, and hang fairy lights in dorm rooms. They push carts, overflowing with posters and clothes, microwaves and shower caddies, struggling to keep track of their belongings. But large suitcases aren’t the only things that freshmen latch onto.
