From afar, the members of The Pennchants might come off as unapproachable. With their sunglasses, Members Only jackets, and supple voices, they could easily pass for a gang of teenage heartthrobs. But when they join me one afternoon for our Zoom interview, Evan Bean (E '23), Bauti Gallino (W '23), and Jack Vernon Lee (C '23) just look like normal guys (although Bauti is sporting his Pennchants baseball cap). They serve as The Pennchants' president, business manager, and marketing director, respectively—they also spearheaded the release of the group's new studio album, Are We There Yet?, on September 4.

Rick Krajewski (E ’13) isn’t your typical politician, but perhaps that’s the point. The software–developer–turned–Reclaim–Philly–organizer went grassroots after a STEM curriculum he developed at a West Philly public school was shelved when the school morphed into privately run charter academy. Since then, he's helped elect District Attorney Larry Krasner, convinced thousands of Philadelphians to pay attention to judicial elections, and ousted a 35–year establishment incumbent to become West Philly’s state representative.
Every morning at 4:30 a.m., Vagrant Coffee Founder Josh Dew starts his day with—you guessed it—a cup of Vagrant coffee.
We all know Zoom—perhaps a little better than any of us would like to. Since the beginning of the COVID–pandemic, this platform has become as essential to the Penn academic experience as the writing seminar requirement and the ever tedious Two-Step Verification to open PennInTouch. Even for our Spring 2021 semester, almost all undergraduate courses were taught virtually—with the small exception of clinical and in–person research opportunities required for select degrees.
From the elaborate stories her mother tells her about how she used to wake from naps and sing from her crib for the whole house to hear to her rise to Music TikTok fame back in December 2020, music has always been a part of Mia Giovina's life.

As Paul Ryan (C '09) set up his room in Kings Court English House on move–in day his first year, his father said the words that would set the stage for Paul's four years at Penn.
If you're an undergraduate Penn student interested in research, you've probably heard about PURM, the Penn Undergraduate Research Mentoring Program.
Much like the rest of us, Lua Beckman (C ‘22) has spent a lot of time throughout the pandemic in her room—except that hers has doubled as a painting studio. The room itself is huge with high ceilings, and her easel sits in the very center surrounded by a bunch of mirrors, which are helpful for looking at a painting from a new perspective and identifying areas that still need work.
Before the spring 2020 semester was even over, Luka Yancopoulos (Viper ‘22) resolved to never take an online course again. The Yorktown Heights native is a lover of school, but maintains that learning isn’t the same when it takes place over Zoom. Once it became clear that the fall 2020 semester would be virtual as well, Luka decided to take a gap year. At the time, he had no idea what he would go on to accomplish in his months away from Penn.

It's a hot grad summer—and these 10 seniors are no exception.
Located over 3,000 miles north of Philadelphia, Brandon Nguyen (C, W '21) spent the summer after his sophomore year learning that the worst part about working as an organic potato farmer is weeding. After every long day of farming nothing but potatoes, he would enjoy a hot meal of more potatoes and fish freshly caught from the cold depths of the Arctic Ocean, before doing further work on the research project that had initially brought him to the Arctic Circle.
Bernie Wang (C, E '21) has a significantly more calm and humble demeanor when compared to any Penn student, so much so that his humility can hide how accomplished he is.
Adam Konkol (C '21) has the kind of resume that proves it’s possible to find a path in life where you’re passionate about the things you’re good at and good at the things you’re passionate about. It definitely inspires hope that we can all, with dedication and work, stumble on similar paths of our own—where fulfilling our academic or work responsibilities during most of the day just means we’re enjoying what we do at every moment.
If Sydney Lewis (C ’21) had to describe her last four years at Penn in one word, it would be "yes."
