Anyone who knows Hillel cook Troy Harris can speak to his infectious positive energy, an aura that is evident even upon first meeting him. After working at Hillel for over 17 years, Harris has become a well–known figure amongst Penn students and has a strong passion for his job, which he describes as a way to meet people “from all different walks of life” by starting a conversation with anyone and everyone who walks in the door.

“You typically don’t come out of this place when it’s light outside,” Darnell Foreman (C’ 18) said, gesturing to the court in front of him at the Palestra.

Sometimes, it’s hard to be a good person. We get it. Wharton Wellness, however, is hoping to change that with their Just Making Happiness Happen (JMHH) Awards, which is given to three Wharton students nominated by their peers for just being good people.

Imagine going to class for three hours a week in the Writing Center, not having any homework due, and not knowing what to expect at all. The only thing you know is that you will be using your laptop and surfing the web with your classmates and your professor—definitely not something you would do in a typical class. There’s a class like that at Penn, and not just in your dreams. It’s called Wasting Time on the Internet (ENGL 111), taught by Kenneth Goldsmith, and it’s one of the many iconic classes Goldsmith teaches at Penn.

Penn 10 is here. And it's time to nominate! Think of Penn 10 as our version of Forbes' "30 under 30," but cooler and younger because you're featured in it. Now that you've ruminated on it, who comes to mind?

Huntsman Hall this time of year teems with students and recruiters. It’s on–campus recruiting season. Hopping from information sessions to on–campus interviews, hundreds of students suit up to impress the employers from JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, and their ilk.

Last Saturday, I woke up at 5:30 a.m. with 12 other Penn students to make the two and a half hour trip to Washington, D.C. for March for Our Lives. While on the train, at the gas station, and in between the inspiring speeches, I stopped to ask my fellow marchers what persuaded them to attend the event. This is what they had to say.

After the long, arduous process of applying to college, many students found that they needed a break. Whether that meant traveling the world, staying at home, riding horses, or becoming a dancer, these Penn students felt much more prepared for college after taking a year for themselves. Unsurprisingly, their main advice to anyone considering taking one was "just do it!"

For most of us, going to college means leaving our family behind. But what about students with siblings at Penn? I sat down with three sets of siblings to see how coming to Penn with a sibling affects the college experience.

It is not uncommon for college students to consider (or reconsider) their faith in God at some point during their four years of school. This is especially true for Penn’s religiously–affiliated students, some of whom feel that their faith has differentiated their time on campus from non–affiliated students. There are few places on campus where this is more apparent than the Newman Center, Penn’s primary Catholic community. It’s a place where college and religion, two seemingly opposing concepts, don’t necessarily need to conflict.

SPEC Connaissance, the branch of Special Events and Planning Committee responsible for bringing speakers to campus, originally announced that the comedian would be coming to Irvine Auditorium on April 3. They later announced on Mar. 28 that he would not be able to come "due to unexpected circumstances."

As president of the Undergraduate Assembly, Michelle Xu has a lot of emails to answer. This week, one of them was from Street. She told us about her experience as president and her time at Penn—which includes blue hair, bacon, and Brits. Meet Michelle:

For most Penn students, learning how to make a home–cooked meal is an unavoidable and (if we’re being honest) somewhat unattainable rite of passage. For Rachel Prokupek (W ‘20), it’s a skill that she’s mastered on three different continents.

QPenn begins today. It’s a week full of on–campus cultural events ranging from mixers to discussion groups, a keynote speaker event, and even a drag show to improve the experience of the LGBTQ community at Penn. Ella Bei (C ’20), one of QPenn's two arts supplement co–editors, shares what it’s like to be involved in the event.

The Kelly Writers House hosts events all the time. There’s usually food, and always a throng of eager English majors sitting on the mismatched wooden chairs. But there aren't always American Sign Language interpreters and a discussion on how to best represent the unspoken language onto the page in English.

Everyone likes a good underdog. Just ask Evan Thomas (W ‘20) and Meghan Chapman (C ‘18) of Dischord, one of the 17 a cappella groups on Penn’s campus. They view their group as having had a significant trajectory of success over the past few years, and their upcoming 20th anniversary show is meant to celebrate the group’s ascendancy within the competitive ranks of Penn a cappella.

Like most of us in high school, I was guilty of pursuing many different hobbies at once, and piling up too many club duties to handle, oftentimes begrudgingly sacrificing one for another, more prominent position. Throughout my life, I never really felt a strong bond to most of the activities that I participated in. Some people aren’t like this at all—they find a passion and stick to it. Anish Welde (C’21) is one of these people.
