Among College Hall and Locust Walk, the Quadrangle is one of the first images to appear after searching up Penn on Google Images. To outsiders it is one of the more majestic buildings on campus, but to students, the Quad is seen as the ultimate symbol of freshman life at Penn. What could be better than living in one huge building with hundreds of other freshmen trying to figure out their lives at college? It’s the perfect place to find friends, whether that be in your hall, a short walk away to another residential college, or in McClelland. Whenever you need to study with a classmate or comfort your friend after a rough night, you can be at their room within a couple of minutes and if it’s cold, you don’t even have to leave the building. Many students find their friend group in the Quad or generally enjoy the constant liveliness that is the result of students from all different types of backgrounds being crammed into two blocks. The Quad is almost like a mini neighborhood, but it is a neighborhood that is part of the fabric of Penn.

While most Penn students are able to identify, or at least acknowledge the presence of, LGBT groups on campus, few could specifically point to Penn Non–Cis, a transgender awareness and support group on campus, as a major influencer in the community. Brennan Burns (C ‘20), the club’s new financial chair, hopes to change this. Brennan discusses the group’s evolution at Penn and how she plans on help it grow in 2018.

Meet The Greenfield Intercultural Center. Fondly known as the GIC to those who have been involved with it before, the Greenfield Intercultural Center serves as a home to countless students on campus.

Hill College House is like that brace–faced 8th grader in middle school who shows up to the first day of high school transformed into the trendiest person on campus. Hill was in its awkward phase to put it lightly, until this year. Now, it is the cool and coveted.

In today's post–Serial world, podcasting has reached an ubiquity that few saw coming. It stands to reason that the podcast boom would make its way to Penn. Here are just a few of Penn's podcasters, whether they're academic departments, individual students, or...Career Services? The more you know.

What is Penn, or any university, without constant construction and renovation? While bothersome, the building projects always gives students something to look forward to in the coming years. New College House West (NCHW) is one of these such projects and is slated to open in the fall of 2021. While no current students will be around to see it unveiled, it has still caused much discussion.

I don’t think I’ve ever met a family with such instant infectious energy as the Greys. As I entered through the glass doors of New College House on Friday to meet the house’s faculty director, Classical Studies Associate Professor Campbell Grey, I could barely utter a greeting before I was overtaken by the excitement of his two children upon seeing a new face in their midst. Connor, age four, couldn’t wait to show off his light–up snake toy and dangerously fast monster truck. Isabel, nine, confidently strutted alongside me through the dorm halls in her pajamas. Their self assurance was undeniable, one of many positive traits that Grey attributed to the unique structure of living in the college house system.

Last Wednesday night, people crowded Hillel’s second floor to listen to Peter Stern’s life story. Peter Stern is 81. He lives in Haverford. He’s a retired teacher. And he gives speeches at middle schools and high schools and at places like Penn.

Children outside leap playfully, it’s warmer than usual, and cloudier. I can feel the ambiance changing from comfort to a sort of suspense as I see a small sign with the title “The Colored Girls Museum.” I realize, that despite brief research, I don’t know what to expect.

It had been one of those days. You know the type. You don’t need the specifics to understand, but I was tired, frustrated, and bored by life in general. I was annoyed at everyone, mostly at myself. I had gotten back into bed in the early afternoon, but I knew if I stayed there another moment I might explode.

Philadelphia is one of the best cities for live music in the country. Unfortunately, many Penn students have a hard time finding ways to enter the music scene. Penn Records is trying to change that. In just a few months, Penn Records went from an idea to a full–force organization with over 40 members, an executive board, and a list of successful live shows. But for president Johnny Vitale (C ’20), this is only the beginning.

Ask a freshman to describe club membership at Penn, and “welcoming” is not a word that initially comes to mind. While many underclassmen are entering the spring semester with some sort of club experience under their belts, it’s hard to forget the initial shock of NSO’s Student Activities Fair and the intense application period that followed, when it became quickly apparent that passionate for a club was not enough to gain entry. It’s a culture that has recently been criticized for heightening mental health issues on campus. It’s also a culture that Wharton Latino rejects entirely.

Deb Varvoutis can multitask. She doles out falafel and veggie chili to polite students who’ve waited in line for 10, 15, 20 minutes, braving the January wind. In between all of her gentle "How are you?" and "Make sure you grab a fork!" banter with customers, she tells me about Magic Carpet, the food cart she’s worked at for the last three decades.

On some days, the warm sun shines down intensely, kissing his skin. On other days, the cold pierces right through him, the harsh wind scraping roughly against his nimble limbs. His heart does not race because he is nervous. In fact, he is perfectly calm and comfortable, regardless of the weather. Marvin has learned to trust the process.

There aren't many places open late at night at Penn, and that's more than a problem. Fortunately for Penn students, Insomnia Cookies was created for this express purpose, to indulge your munchies. A genius Penn student, Seth Berkowitz (C' 14), founded the company after he used to sell cookies out of an Easy–Bake Oven on Locust Walk. The location in Houston Hall is in fact the first location ever.

You asked, and we listened. This week's Ego of the Week was the most requested member of the senior class on last semester's nomination form. Rob Warshaw is pretty involved across campus, but this self–proclaimed goofball is best known for his cheerful demeanor and outgoing nature. After all, it's about time we started celebrating more people for being plain ol' good friends.
