Hidden between the two main streets -- Chestnut and Spruce at 45th -- lies the hardly monumental Sam's Place. Even for the biggest proponents of West Philadelphia's BYOBs, Sam's is unique -- uniquely commonplace. During a hunt for food, a hungry Penn student might head West in hopes of finding the best place to eat that is still unspoiled by an excess of patrons. Rx, already been there. Marigold, too pricey. And Baltimore Avenue? Why not?

On the way over, however, it is hard to miss Sam's Place. The exciting colorful paintings on the exterior and the alfresco-arranged tables draw people in to stop by and see what the vendor offers. Unfortunately, the exterior is probably the most climactic portion of the excursion into Sam's Place. No-nonsense walls and a no-frills interior sells merchandise that you'd likely see at any local convenience store.

The only food offered at Sam's is the typical assortment of fast fare bagels, muffins and coffee. Sam's is definitely a place to go if you want to grab some friends and relax for a quick bite, but it lacks the options and ambience that most people are looking for when trying to savor a nice Sunday afternoon.

Main point: In the neighborhood and wanting something small to tie you over before dinner? Stop by. Want a real meal? Save your cash for someplace else.
