Tucked away amidst the brightly lit storefronts of Center City is this remarkable new gem, Miel Patisserie. While there are numerous small bakeries and cafes downtown, this one takes the cake, literally. As an homage to a traditional French bakery, this new addition has used meticulous detail to recreate a true-to-form patisserie.

When you first walk in, you are overwhelmed by the glossy countertops and brightly lit shelving, which showcases the cafe's offerings. But once you get past the phenomenal layout, you are drawn in by the enticing smells. The lit cases house everything from flavored brioches to every type of baguette possible. Some are lined with tarts, others with freshly made chocolates, and small gateaux, or cakes -- all of which are made in house. Even the traditionally French palmiers and croissants are far richer than those that might be found on or around campus.

In addition to these very sophisticated pastries, Miel Patisserie also sells its own homemade jams, in both apricot and tart cherry to perfectly complement anything sweet you happen to pick up.

Miel is an ideal place to pick up a gift, as one can purchase gift orders made from scratch or pre-packaged treats, beautifully wrapped for those on the go. While there is no seating available, it is still worth coming in, even if it is only to pick up some dinner rolls. Prices are a bit steep for college living, but it is well worth the trip to Center City to enjoy a bevy of delicious and traditional treats served up with great taste and unbeatable sophistication. At Miel, the staff truly brings meaning to the word gourmet -- with pastries as beautiful as they are delicious.

And an extra bonus is that for those observing Passover, Miel offers not only chocolate covered matzah -- as a nice alternative -- but also gourmet macaroons, to whet the appetite for the seder.
