Dollar Warehouse

4007 Market Street

(215) 387-4972

You've probably passed it hundreds of times, as you make your weekly or daily trudge over to Market Street to pick up some spirits. But there on 40th and Market sits a gem whose precious stones won't cost you a pretty penny -- well, fine, only 100 of them. It's Dollar Warehouse, and the store delivers just what its name suggests -- stuff that costs a dollar.

They have everything you could possibly ask for, not to mention some things you wouldn't ever want to ask for. But that's the beauty of a store where every item costs the same as a McDonald's sundae.

There are the usual trinkets, knickknacks and baubles. Silk flowers, hair ribbons, loofahs, ladies undergarments, self-adhesive floor tiles, Feline and Friends Candle Tins, plastic orange bowls with a large smile painted on. Throwing a birthday bash? They've got everything you need from birthday candles, to decorated paper plates to Princess Jasmine party favors.

But there are also plenty of highly useful items at way more college-friendly prices than the alternative stores around campus. You can get a wide variety of school supplies to start your year off right. I mean, who really needs those pricey notebooks and folders embossed with the Penn insignia. Everyone here knows you go to Penn. And, in case you haven't noticed, they go here too, and they're not impressed.

For those of you living off campus, you can now afford to replace that grimy, slimy shower curtain that actually makes you dirtier when you come out of the shower than when you got in. Get some extension cords to help you out with the faulty wiring in your classy abode. You can even get that sealant to insulate your air conditioning unit and turn your room into the Eden-like oasis it was always meant to be.

So stop in, look around, let out a hearty chuckle at the moth flakes, the hilarious selection of audio cassettes and the enormously oversized shower caps. Then take all the money you saved and treat yourself to a Grey Goose shopping spree a few doors down.
