This Valentine’s Day, think outside the chocolate box and go with a waffle iron instead. Standing outside of its Center City locale, you would think that Bonté Wafflerie and Café is your average hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop, but the second the smell of homemade fresh waffles hits you, you’re powerless to resist. The menu is minimalist at best and Bonté has a tendency to run out of many of its sandwiches and soups on the weekends. However, the main attractions here are the waffles, which are always a sure bet.

Try yours with mix-ins such as dark chocolate and walnuts, or strawberries and bananas if you’d like to pretend you’re being healthy. Plus, no waffle is complete unless you’re ordering it with ice cream, in flavors like vanilla, chocolate, or butterscotch. Be warned though. Ask for syrup and all you’re asking for is a contemptuous look. These are real Belgian waffles after all, not your average Penn insignia branded Commons’ ones. If the economy’s got you down, make up the price of the cab ride by going for breakfast, when waffles are buy one get one free. Even if you’re part of the anti-V-Day crowd, you should still grab a friend and grab a bite. After all, nothing says, “I hate romance,” like stabbing into a waffle.
