The cheers and jeers of the inebriated frat boy scene just ain’t cutting it any more? Dying to find your inner Kelly Clarkson? Then follow the color-changing lyrics as we take you through Philadelphia’s karaoke gems.

McGillin’s Old Ale House 1310 Drury St. Wednesday through Friday, 10 p.m. Don’t let its historic atmosphere scare you off, this bar and part-time karaoke joint was named one of the 14 coolest pubs in the U.S. by Gourmet Magazine and is an annual winner for Philadelphia Style’s karaoke favorite. The place has a divey feel thanks in part to its nostalgic décor. Be wary, however, karaoke singers take themselves seriously here. If your performance is not up to par, the Simon Cowell-esque bartenders will “boo” you off with the ring of a ship bell.

Locust Bar 235 S. 10th St. Sundays, 7 p.m. For a no-nonsense bar and an unusual mix of the talented and the tone-deaf, check out Locust Bar’s Sunday night karaoke. Singing starts at 7 p.m., but claim your spot on the line-up early. The competition’s not as stiff as McGillin’s, but you can expect plenty of snarky comments if you mangle a crowd favorite. Spurn Van Pelt and “Don’t Stop Believing” with a Sunday night trip to Locust Bar.
