1987: Sonny Bono declares his candidacy for mayor of Palm Springs, a position that he would go on to win. Says Bono of his political career, “I’m a maverick. I’ve always been a maverick.”

1991: Sinead O’Connor boycotts the Grammys and refuses to accept her four award nominations. Although controversial, nothing compares to her guest appearance on Saturday Night Live the following year, during which she tore a photograph of the pope in half.

1998: Chumbawamba’s Danbert Nobacon throws a bucket of cold water over the head of UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott during the Brit Awards in London, leaving onlookers wondering if it was the whiskey drink, the vodka drink, the lager drink or the cider drink that impaired his judgment.
