Each team has five players on the track at a time — three blockers and one pivot play defense, and the sole “jammer” is able to score. Each player wears a specific helmet cover that indicates their position.

The game begins with the pivots and blockers from both teams forming a pack, facing counterclockwise. With the start of the game, “jam formation” begins, and the pack begins skating and jostling for position. Soon real play begins with a jam, a two minute period in which the jammers attempt to pass the pack, receiving one point for each time they do so. Pivots and blockers help their team’s jammer through the pack while blocking their opponent.

The first jammer to pass the pack becomes the lead jammer. She has the opportunity to end the jam any time before the two minute period is up. Both jammers have the opportunity to switch positions with the pivot, simply by passing them their helmet cover.

Play continues in a series of two-minute jams for two 30-minute or three 20-minute periods, depending on league regulations.
