Want to get started on a two-wheeled life of your own? There are plenty of places right in West Philly that can help. For those who like their wheels new, check out Trophy Bikes (3131 Walnut St.). Open seven days a week, this independently owned bike shop will help you find the perfect fit for your needs. Not ready to commit? Trophy also rents out bikes during the spring and summer — pick one up for only $25 a day (including helmet, lock and rack). Want to bring the party with you? Rent the sound system, which comes in a trailer that attaches to the bike. Insta-party on the banks of the Schuylkill or insta-annoyance on your block, your choice.

For those looking to do their part and recycle, Firehouse Bicycles (701 S. 50th St.) is an option. The shop sells high quality used bikes — road, cruiser, fixies, you name it — all of which have been refurbished by their staff of trained bike mechanics. Purchases are guaranteed for 30 days, after which the staff offers a free tune-up. The shop also stocks new tools and parts for those looking to customize or upgrade their existing ride.

Much of this customization can be done right on campus at the Bike Church (3916 Locust Walk), part of the Neighborhood Bike Works program. This bike repair co-op is open to all on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and to women and transgender-identified adults on Wednesdays, all from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The shop has many inexpensive used parts (and some complete bikes) and volunteers on hand to answer questions as you work on your bike. All that is asked is that you complete a small chore at the end of your time in the shop.

Whether you ride between Beige and Fisher-Bennett or coast up and down the Schuylkill River trail, be safe. Wear a helmet, get off the sidewalk and follow the rules of the road. Pick up a bicycle — you’ll be fitter, greener and just that much cooler, too.
