The spheres of politics and journalism converge around two mysterious deaths in the sleek thriller State of Play. Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe), a streetwise reporter, quickly immerses himself in the case. His friend, Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck), is spearheading an investigation into the alleged privatization of homeland security, but finds himself embroiled in the action when reports of an affair with one of the victims surfaces.

The film relies on observant viewers, who will appreciate the faultless junction of seemingly divergent plot lines. Director Kevin Macdonald employs a host of stylistic devices as he winds the film’s pace to a fantastic frenzy.

The real credit, though, belongs to the impeccable cast. Helen Mirren infuses a dry spark into her ruthless editor, and Rachel McAdams enhances her smug blogger with a surprising vulnerability. At the center of it all is Crowe, who proves his heralded skills yet again and makes this Play worth sticking around for.
