It was easy to miss the release of “White Moon,” even for discerning indie fans: the track was snuck in the middle of an iTunes Session EP that came out a month ago. Don’t blame yourself if you missed it, because those iTunes EPs are typically not the greatest investments. You also shouldn’t blame yourself as it’s not a very groundbreaking song.

“White Moon” is nearly as sparse as anything Beach House has ever released, but it’s a bit bouncier. Fans of the band’s past work will have no reason to dislike “White Moon.” It’s just, when a band releases some song in that awkward interstitial phase between albums, you want to hear them do something slightly weird and basically unprecedented. “Jonathan Low” by Vampire Weekend was just unique enough to be interesting. “White Moon,” on the other hand, is too plain to distinguish itself as Beach House is off of everyone’s radars. So on the whole, there’s no reason to complain about “White Moon” as an average Beach House song. But at the same time, there’s not much to be pumped about either. You’d be better off saving your excitement for their next LP.
