Amid the erotica and head shops down at 3rd and South Streets, there is a kosher, organic burger restaurant that’s aptly named — Burger.org. Go inside, and you’ll immediately feel brighter and healthier.

Green and orange walls and hanging lamps provide cheer and warmth, and various potted plants and bowls of fruit emphasize the restaurant’s organic philosophy. The seating options, bars or tables with leather stools, contribute to this casual and friendly atmosphere. Upon entry patrons are invited to check out the menu and then to place their orders at the counter. The menu may seem small, but with “additions” and specials, we were able to spice up the classics and experiment with flavors.

In keeping with the theme of the restaurant, we went for the burgers. The 3 Mini Burger sampling ($9.99) offers a choice of beef, turkey, chicken, lamb, fish or veggie patty. For starters, we ordered two veggies and a turkey each with an addition of guacamole ($0.75).

The veggie patty is homemade with corn, carrots, spinach, peas and cucumber slices, a must–try even for meat lovers. The freshness of the ingredients is obvious and each component is pleasingly decipherable. Unfortunately, the free–range turkey patty was disappointing, dry and lacking in flavor.

With our appetites sparked from our first four patties, we delved into the meatier side of the menu. The classic beef burger with an added fried egg over easy ($7.99) is perfect for those in search of a hearty meal. The meat was tender and juicy, and the egg increased the richness of the burger, just pushing the borderline of flavor–overload.

Burger.org’s specialty dish, El Mariachi ($7.99),  comes with homemade pico de gallo, guacamole, raw onion, tomato, lettuce and homemade chipotle sauce on any patty — we chose beef for this one, too. The fresh salsa and vegetables tempered the creaminess of the spicy chipotle sauce and guacamole, while the beef again proved moist and tasty. We recommend ordering every burger with a lettuce wrap instead of a bun — we found that the bread detracted from the good stuff in between.
