Endings tend to suck, especially when good things come to an end. I always try to view life through rosé–colored glasses, though, so I usually find the silver lining in moving on from positive phases or aspects of my life. However, with my time as Food Boy here at Street coming to a close, I’ve yet to find that silver lining. It’s been such a fun and fulfilling experience coming up with and trying out new recipes every week and befriending the wonderful people on staff. So for my last recipe, I decided on some easy and dope tacos for a few reasons. First, these tacos are light, tangy and great for the summer months ahead of us. Second, they’re perfect to share with friends and as Street staff already knows, I get as much enjoyment over sharing the food I make with others as I do making it. Finally, as the name suggests, this recipe calls for pineapple, a symbol of welcome and hospitality in many cultures. (Pineapple also has some certain other added benefits, as you’ll learn elsewhere in this issue). So instead of saying goodbye with this recipe, I’m welcoming the future. With these tacos, my future is looking pretty sweet and spicy!

Tiramisu is a classic dessert from Northern Italy whose name translates literally to “pick me up.” This refers to the caffeine from the espresso–soaked ladyfingers which gives you a jolt of energy when you need a little pick–me–up. (Get it now?) If only it could perk up my GPA as well as my level of energy. *Cries.* Anyway this recipe is simple, quick and low maintenance. The hardest part is ordering a flat white at Starbucks or finding the mascarpone in FroGro. (It’s over by the cured meats, go figure!) Does your bank account need a little pick–me–up too? Impress your parents with this recipe, and they will be much more likely to say yes when you ask them for money afterward because you just clearly demonstrated how responsible, classy and cultured you’ve become by making them this dessert! And at only $4/serving, you’ll have a great ROI! Look at you now! You’re gettin’ paper!

A big part of my creative process when it comes to formulating new recipes is seeing what flavors and ingredients actual professional chefs pair together and mimicking those in my recipes. So, naturally, I love to go out to restaurants and try the most unusual or adventurous dishes on the menu. I was inspired by some great dishes from local restaurants so I’ve recreated them here Food Boy-style so you can DIY at home! These recipes are not by any means meant to replace the experience of enjoying these fantastic restaurants, but they instead offer a more budget-friendly alternative to the budding home chef or the graduate who’s no longer in Philadelphia. More so than any other city, Philly is defined by its eclectic and vibrant food scene (what other city is known for something as outrageous and exceedingly unique as the cheesesteak?), so these recipes will allow you to bring a little piece of Philly with you wherever you end up this summer or in your post-Penn life.

So yesterday’s Dining Guide got me feelin’ some type of way about my plans for the future. I really love science and am actively looking for a full–time job in biotech (HMU if you know people, srsly), but I also really love to cook and eat food. I think about Ina Garten’s (the Barefoot Contessa on the Food Network) life story a lot; she worked in the White House as a nuclear energy policy analyst before opening a specialty food store and becoming the (trap) queen of easy breezy entertaining in the Hamptons. Like why can’t that be my life?! Then I realize that it totally can be! Nothing’s set in stone, so I’ll just go with the flow, work hard and see what comes my way. That being said, if I were to open an eating establishment in the future, this recipe would definitely be on the menu with exactly the same name. This sandwich is a crazy blend of salty, creamy, sweet, savory and, of course, cheesy. Remember when SpongeBob put jelly on that rando’s Krabby Patty, and he was so moved that he sang a whole song about how delicious it was? You might react the same way with this recipe. Fair warning!

So last week’s brunch recipe is great for the weekends, but for the other 5/7ths of the week, mornings usually aren't as leisurely. Instead of scrambling some eggs, I’m always scrambling to grab my backpack and a granola bar on my way out the door while tryna be on time (for once) to my 9 a.m. I want to have time for a good breakfast, but I also want to look cute AF for my stroll down Locust to class just in case I meet my soulmate. (Don’t tell me you’ve never thought that; we’ve all thought that). After repeatedly experiencing the embarrassment that comes with my tummy audibly rumbling in class, I came up with this healthy, pre–made breakfast recipe. Protein from the peanut butter, fiber from the oats and ~natural sugar~ from the banana all add up to a guilt–free cookie that wakes you up and keeps you fuller longer. Make a batch on Sunday night and start all your weekdays off right.

Hell hath no fury like waiting an hour to be seated at your favorite brunch place. You didn’t drag your hungover ass out of bed for that shit. Instead, invite your homies over to your place to recount the previous night’s debauchery and to keep the inebriation going when the champagne starts flowing. This brunch idea has just the right blend of savory and sweet and will satisfy your rumbling tummy without knocking you up with an incapacitating food baby. Also, since you probably dropped a hefty number of dolla dolla billz on alc over the weekend, this easy brunch will satisfy your wallet as much as your stomach.

The end of February is such a tease because it’s not consistently warm out yet, spring break is so close yet still four midterms/papers away and March could bring a huge snowstorm and 90 degree weather in the same week. In other words, this seasonal transition period really sucks, and we all just want it to be in the low 70’s every day. Luckily, this light pasta dish will transport you to those hot summer nights, mid–July, when you and I were forever wild (i.e. getting drunk off a Mike's Hard down the shore... or is that just me?). Also, summer lovin’ happened so fast because this dish takes only 20 minutes. It's way cheaper than you can get at any restaurant. This classy shrimp scampi screams summertime, and the livin’ (aka this recipe) is easy!

Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt personally victimized by your snacking habit. Literally same. I mean, what’s a Netflix binge without snacks to keep you awake? Street suggests starting the latest seasons of Baking Bad and American Horror Story: Oven, and discovering your new favorite binge snack. These roasted chickpeas are salty and crunchy, so you won’t even miss that bag of chips that’s mostly air anyway. Plus, with loads more fiber and protein than chips, this snack will keep you fuller longer and help keep you ~regular~ (bye, Activia). Try out this recipe and snack smarter while studying, streaming or as a mid–afternoon pick–me–up! Your body will thank you.

If you’re looking to swipe that V–card on V–Day or just need a little aid to get laid,
Street has you covered (in sweat and/or whipped cream). (Dick)–Picture this: you’re out
in Center City on a date with that hottie you may or may not have DFMOed with at
Smokes’ last week. You two already spent about five weeks of your budget, and the dessert
items will blow another week’s worth. With this recipe, you can titty–llatingly suggest
going back to your place for a lil (or big) somethin' sweet. Good for saving money and
getting that hottie back to your crib. Also, need I point out this dessert's suggestive shape?
Don't know about you—or your date—but we certainly can't wait to get these glistening
bananas in our mouths.

Can I just bitch about cookie recipes for a hot second? The Internet is chock full of cookie recipes described as “easy” or “quick,” and technically they are. But, they require like 27 ingredients, none of which you have on hand as a college student, five of which you can’t find anywhere near Penn and one of which you have to import by basically selling your third child to a mystical shaman who lives on a remote island in Indonesia. Then you buy, for example, an entire box of baking soda so that you can use 1/8 of a teaspoon for that one recipe. So, instead of dropping a small fortune on a bunch of ingredients you’ll never use again, here’s a fun and inexpensive way to (d)augment a prepared cookie mix. This recipe is inspired by the amazing cookies from Carma’s Café, an adorable bistro I lived near in Baltimore, Maryland. While Carma is still the HBIC of cookies, Food Boy is assuming the role of LBIB (lazy bitch in bed) with this shortcut recipe for seductive cookies that’ll leave you saying, “WOOF!”

Welcome to Food Boy, Street’s weekly cooking column! Easy, simple recipes. Common, inexpensive ingredients. More homemade food porn for your Instagram. Served with a side of sauciness. Rihanna once said, “Come here, Food Boy, Boy! Can you cook it up?” Yep, and here’s how!
