We all know Zoom—perhaps a little better than any of us would like to. Since the beginning of the COVID–pandemic, this platform has become as essential to the Penn academic experience as the writing seminar requirement and the ever tedious Two-Step Verification to open PennInTouch. Even for our Spring 2021 semester, almost all undergraduate courses were taught virtually—with the small exception of clinical and in–person research opportunities required for select degrees.

When many people hear "Victoria’s Secret," the brand name tends to conjure up images of the retailer's iconic, yet controversial, so–called Angels. This elite group of tall, thin supermodels is famous for donning extravagant wings, G–string thongs, and jewel encrusted push–up bras while strutting down the runway in the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Their photos are plastered on the walls of all of the company's stores.

While Penn's close proximity to downtown Philadelphia is certainly a perk that many students take advantage of, life in the city can sometimes feel overwhelming and crowded—especially if you happen to be a nature nut. It’s easy to miss the quiet of the outdoors when surrounded by skyscrapers and bustling streets. Fortunately for us, there are a number of scenic hiking spots a mere walk or bike ride away from campus that serve as oases from the hectic energy that characterizes Philly.

'Tis the season to stock up on stylish sundresses, a wear–everywhere pair of denim shorts, beach–ready sandals, and—of course—bathing suits. There is nothing more relaxing than lying on the beach in a swimsuit that makes you feel confident and cool—both literally and figuratively.

If you're an undergraduate Penn student interested in research, you've probably heard about PURM, the Penn Undergraduate Research Mentoring Program.

As a first year, I’ve heard of the hectic and wild stories of Penn’s Spring Fling, but I didn't expect the shouting and hustle of my first one to be centered on desperately searching for the Zoom link to Chloe x Halle’s performance from a stiff, red armchair in Lauder College House. Penn's annual Spring Fling was a hybrid between virtual performances and in–person giveaways. The concert spanned two weekends and featured strong performances from well–known artists such as Gryffin, Cherub, Rina Sawayama, and Louis the Child the first weekend, and Chloe x Halle, Wale, and Wizkid this past weekend.

Amalia Hochman sat in a coffee shop as a high school junior watching a livestream of her friend getting arrested at a protest.

As first years settle onto campus, our phones have been our best friends in college. Through Penn’s mandatory Open Pass policy, we are required to bring our phones everywhere.

After months of social isolation and being spread across the globe, most first years are stepping onto campus for the first time and living with strangers. Like many others, I spent the first months of my college experience with my family in our home. We tried to handle (emphasis on tried) the political and health stress of this time together and got into a pandemic–friendly rhythm through household rules and habits to maximize our safety and sanity.

Like many of my peers, I've been hunkering down in my home state, Rhode Island, for remote learning. While voting this November, I was asked to vote on changing my state’s name on the first ballot proposition question.

When I first set out to learn about the Penn experience with virtual tutoring this semester, I expected to hear about another dimension of the disconnect and shortcomings of remote learning. I had had a week which culminated in a repugnant screen time update and disdain for Zoom, Canvas, and any remote learning platform. I thought that perhaps the reality of being a student, or simply a person, in 2020 would mean a decrease in Penn students caring about their courses or using Penn’s resources. While the first year of virtual tutoring has come with difficulties, my conversations about Penn’s online tutoring world rather highlighted the resilience, collaboration, and creativity of our entire community.

I am—like many of other remote Penn students—dying to be in Philly right now. As I usually channel my disappointments and hopes into oddly named Spotify playlists and am already spending a ridiculous amount of time on my computer, I decided to bring Philly to me. Quasi–mixtapes inspired by Philly have been made before, even by Street back when the Eagles won in 2018, but I’d like to highlight these acclaimed artists’ ties to Philly and what led them to croon about our city. Give my playlist a little brotherly love and I hope to be rocking out together next semester!
