For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved advertisements. As a young child growing up in Pakistan, my eyes would be glued to television commercials of beautiful women in extravagant wedding clothes and the clever billboards on the highway of greasy Kentucky Fried Chicken. Whenever my family traveled abroad and I had access to all the Teen Vogue and Seventeen magazines I could dream of, I spent hours flipping through the vibrant glossy pictures, captivated by the creativity before my eyes.

That girl, clean girl, tomato girl, coastal cowgirl, hot girl walks. We’re living in the era of girl–ification. As YouTuber Mina Le points out, “Girls are girling, hot girls are walking, girls are blogging. Dinner is girl, 40–year–old men are baby girls. We are in a girl economy.” But, what are the repercussions of this incessant gendering of all things pop culture?

I first dipped my toes into the world of beauty and skincare at the age of nine. As soon as my mom left to run errands, I snuck into her room and planted myself at her magical vanity. With the contents of her makeup bag laid out in front of me, Zoella’s iconic makeup tutorials playing on an iPad mini, and a luxurious black bullet of lipstick in hand, I meticulously applied the scarlet shade to my lips. Armed solely with practice in using Maybelline’s BabyLips, it’s no surprise that the final result was far from ideal—I looked more like Miranda Sings than Red–era Taylor Swift.

It is no secret that controlling women’s bodies is one of the patriarchy’s biggest tools to undermine women: Women are taught to hate how they look and are pressured to change their bodies, ending up stuck in a vicious cycle of self–hate. For years, women have been hounded to minimize the space they take up in this world. After all, "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels."

If you’re a chronically online TikTok addict who probably spends too much time scrolling (totally not speaking from experience!), chances are you had a neutral phase. Everything (and I mean everything) from the T–shirt you wore to bed to the art you decorated your walls with had to fit within the color schemes of beige, grey, white, and black. Color was so distasteful, so old–fashioned, so cheugy!

The fashion side of TikTok and Instagram is booming. There are countless tutorials on how to incorporate color into your wardrobe like a Scandi girl, thousands of get–ready–with–me videos featuring French style button–downs and flared jeans, and endless clips of outfits of the day on the streets of New York City. In mainstream media, the West is synonymous with exemplary taste—NYC, Paris, London, and Milan are exalted as the world’s fashion capitals, and Western designers are worshiped for their pioneering collections. But why don’t we ever seem to hear about the groundbreaking style choices of the rest of the world? Why is social media constantly bombarded with posts romanticizing Western fashion, but rarely with those recognizing global fashion?
