I have watched in horror and disbelief with the rest of the country as reports of mass shootings and instances of gun violence have consistently plagued news outlets and dinner–table conversations for almost as long as I could remember. But it wasn’t until about a week ago that I started to think about the issue of gun violence a little more personally.
Dead bread. Doesn't sound too appetizing, does it? With Halloween festivities recently past, I feel like I've been surrounded by all things spooky and scary. And even though "dead bread" sounds like it’d be frightening, I can tell you right now—it's not. It's delicious.
So, if you haven’t been living under a rock for the past six months, you know that Election Day is coming up really soon. Like less–than–two–weeks soon. November 6, to be exact. You would also know that the youngest Americans, aged 18 to 29—A.K.A. us—historically have the lowest voter turnout, with less than half showing up to the polls in the 2016 presidential election. As I took my seat at the Iron Gate Theater and prepared myself for the first act of Bloomers’ premiere fall performance, ‘The Bachelor: Will You Accept this Show?’, I found myself surrounded by a full house. Music loudly played on speakers as last–minute stragglers (like me) settled into their seats, but it didn’t matter. Friends, parents, and student groups filled the theater with laughter and cheers for the Bloomers they’d come to support. The show hadn’t even started yet, but the audience’s buzzing and supportive energy set the tone for a truly hilarious performance.
I’ll be honest. I had never heard of A Star is Born before two weeks ago. But one quick Google search revealed that the upcoming film would include some of my favorite stars of today—Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Dave Chapelle… the list goes on.
When she’s not doing operatic vocal warm ups in her dorm at 6 a.m. or hitting the gym for a workout class, you can catch Elle Winter (C '22), performing her newest single "One More" for loving fans or acting alongside big names like Naomi Watts, Elle Fanning, and Susan Sarandon.
