If there’s anything all of those post–NSO sneezes and sniffles in class show us, it’s that flu season is just around the corner. Aside from putting together a prevention plan (i.e. chug that orange juice and stock up on DayQuil), knowing where the tastiest, most healing soups are in the city definitely helps when you’re stuck wondering how you got sick in the first place.

Sparkling water is polarizing. There’s a divide between those who love or hate it, and a bigger divide between which brand you stay loyal to. With new brands being introduced faster than we can drink a pack of LaCroix, the sparkling water market is anyone’s game. With a mix of old classics and new innovators, Street puts seltzer to the test, tasting for crispness, flavor, and overall freshness.

For better or for worse, art, media, and protest seem more intertwined than ever these days. Social media's effect on the symbiotic relationship between activism and art is undeniable. New platforms allow artists and activists to amplify one another's voices and grow a following without wealth or fame. For evidence of this, look no further than the trend of subversive femininity that's overtaking our timelines and Instagram feeds. Set against the backdrop of an administration that has been criticized by many as anti–feminist, these female creators are turning traditionally female hobbies into political action.

There’s nothing like enjoying warm evenings in the late summer with good food and good company, and the best way to do it is by enjoying some of the city’s best rooftop restaurants. With sweater weather creeping up and just a few weeks of warmth left, make your way over to these spots before the forecasts are a lot less sunny.

Summer 2019 has proven itself to be an explosive time for the Philly restaurant scene. The long–awaited K’Far Cafe has opened, along with a bunch of new neighborhood spots that have livened up otherwise sleepy parts of Philadelphia. With everything from brunch, to Thai, to pizza that’s been dubbed "The World's Best" by Bon Appétit, you have a lot of catching up to do once you’re back on campus. Here’s where to start.

Penn SLAP—or Penn Student Labor Action Project—aims to turn issues they are passionate about into movements. This past semester, the group has been "reborn" after a hiatus. Even with a long summer interrupting their correspondence, they have no plans of slowing down. Their commitment to social justice and advocacy, combined with compassion and empathy, proves that SLAP is back and better than ever.

To say I’ve been waiting a long time for K’Far Cafe to open up is an understatement. Ever since it was announced that the CooknSolo duo behind Zahav and Goldie were opening a then–unnamed restaurant in November of 2018, I’ve been waiting patiently. But if we’re being technical, I’ve been waiting for decent Israeli pastry since I was a little kid begging my mom day after day to make borekas. The only decent Israeli food in Philadelphia for a long time was limited to hummus and falafel. Don’t get me wrong; I mean no disrespect to the honorable hummus and falafel, but I’ve been ready for something new for a while.

Scroll through your Instagram feed. Look at the influencers you follow. How many of them are people of color? How many of them are disabled? How many of them are queer? Do any of them exist outside of the confines of societal standards of beauty? These are a lot of big questions, and they aren’t ones that we usually ask ourselves as we mindlessly scroll through Instagram, but maybe it’s about time we did.

Follow the bees. That's the first thing you should know if you decide to visit the brand new project put together by Penn’s School of Design in honor of the 50–year anniversary of landscape architect Ian McHarg’s 1969 ‘landmark book’ Design With Nature. The project is divided into three parts housed in close, yet different buildings on campus—some of which aren’t well–known to the average Penn student. Therefore, the entrance to each exhibit is covered with large, unmissable swarms of plastic bees, making it easy to find whichever one you’re looking for. Bees were specifically chosen as ornaments because they are symbolic in Rome—ornamental bees marked late Renaissance buildings owned by great patrons.

It’s grilling season, folks, and you know what that means: it’s time to indulge in some quality BBQ. While there’s great satisfaction in grilling your own goods, that tiny apartment you’re subletting might not be the easiest place to make good BBQ. In that case, here’s a list of where to get it.

It’s summer in Philadelphia, and you know what that means: you now have no excuses for all of those vitamin deficiencies you developed in the winter. Fresh and tasty fruit and vegetables from local farms are available in farmers’ markets throughout the city on all days of the week. On top of that, farmers’ markets are a great way to explore all of the artisanal goods Philly vendors have to offer: from handmade chocolates, wonderfully stinky cheeses, to even something as niche as canelés, Philly seems to have it all.

While everyone seems to be talking about lip balm in colder weather, the fact of the matter is that every season is lip balm season. Crusty lips are annoying and painful no matter the season, especially with the heightened possibility for sunburned lips in the summer. It's important to keep lips moisturized and healthy, and in order to do that, a good lip balm is imperative. While the following options are meant to give options (as well as recommend what not to use), lip products and makeup is personal. Experiment and see what works best for you—who knows, maybe you'll find the next cult favorite.

Recently, I read a widely–shared Man Repeller article about why people should get impulsive haircuts and decided that, while I was due for a trim, I needed a different kind of change. The writer of the article, Eliza Dumais, wrote extensively about how emotionally transformative haircuts were for her and the people in her life.

It’s no secret that our social media feeds are full of advertisements. Whether it’s promoted posts from accounts we don’t even follow or paid partnerships between our favorite influencers and brands, it can be overwhelming to realize that many of the posts we see on our feed are encouraging us to spend money.

As a Philly native, I can attest that Philly just feels like a pickle kinda town. Briny, acidic, polarizing, and definitely the underdog of meal sides—pickles are much like our city in the sense that not everyone likes them, the ones who do like them a lot, and those who don’t, frankly, just don’t have good taste. That being said, pickles these days aren’t just limited to the deli dill variety (made out of cucumber) that you know and love. Chances are, if it’s some kind of naturally–occurring food product, you can pickle it.

If there’s one thing you should know before exploring South Philadelphia, it’s that you need to come hungry. From the Italian Market, to the new restaurants popping up in East Passyunk, to the legendary intersection of 9th and Passyunk hosting the decades–long cheesesteak rivalry between Geno’s and Pat’s, South Philadelphia’s food scene is anything but sparse. However, this full food scene didn’t come from nothing; it sprouted from a rich immigrant history, with many of Philadelphia’s immigrant population growing their own vibrant communities that make South Philadelphia the culturally–rich place it is today. With the plethora of cultural landmarks, festivals, museums, and art, you’re sure to find many ways to burn the calories you’re fated to consume upon your time in South Philly.
