Interstellar often gets tossed around when people talk about their favorite films or recall the canon of Christopher Nolan. And the score is arguably one of the most distinctive aspects of the movie. The music, colored by frequent organ instrumentation and high levels of intensity, crystallizes each scene in the movie as memorable and breathtaking. This is no surprise, given that it was composed by Hans Zimmer.

I got no sleep the night before moving into college. Instead, I spent those seven hours silently sobbing into the white comforter of a twin–sized bed, timing my breaths so my mother wouldn’t stir from the other room of the Airbnb.

The O’Connell household in Los Angeles is home to one of the biggest musical duos of the year. Inside the cramped bungalow is a studio belonging to the children of the family—Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas. The former has become a household name, but the latter is slightly less known, clinging to his producer title rather than the face on the cover of the hit album.

Each Monday morning ,Spotify kicks off the week by providing us with a new set of songs that are supposedly calibrated to our specific tastes. When Lorde released her highly–anticipated sophomore album in June 2017, she delivered a blue–tinted project embedded with pop party revelations and crooning heartsick ballads. What set Melodrama apart from her previous work, however, was that it didn't solely come from her imagination—it was, instead, a collaboration of sorts.

Walking into the Fillmore Philadelphia on a cool September evening might bring you a night of dancing alongside your lifetime best friend, or maybe a night of reciting the lyrics you have inscribed within the walls of your mind. But this past weekend, the Fillmore was the place to fall in love. It was the 21st stop on Daniel Caesar’s CASE STUDY 01 Tour, complementing the release of his sophomore album this past June.

When exploring the niche of indie pop music, it doesn’t take too long to stumble across Fitz and the Tantrums. Their 2013 release “Out of My League” was quickly adopted by the happy–go–lucky Tumblr crowd that year and pushed their name to the top of the genre as a staple summer anthem. Six years later, their sound has only gotten stronger. Their third studio album All the Feels was released this past weekend and indicated the maturity the band is heading toward, still coupled with their youthful sound.

There’s an unspoken culture surrounding the way one takes their coffee. The classic first date, the stressful interview, catching up with a friend from home after months of not seeing each other—all these moments that revolve entirely around hanging out at the nearest Starbucks or your favorite hidden spot. And your choice of drink—a calming tea or an espresso–laden latte—might tell more about you as a person than the conversation you hold for hours.

Salvaging beauty from the wreckage that is boredom is what Maia (who prefers to go by her first name, and is known to her fans as mxmtoon) does best. The artist from Northern California demonstrates this skill on her debut album the masquerade, which was released this past weekend. It's the eighteen–year–old’s memoir about what it’s like to exist in the spaces that today’s teenage girls occupy—high school hallways, therapy sessions, and meme pages—and the sense of displacement she feels.

With a voice that sounds like it belongs on the soundtrack of Juno, Greta Kline harbors a deep longing and desire to rewire every aspect of her life on Close It Quietly. Her band, Frankie Cosmos, recorded their fourth album near their homes in New York, letting the scenes and stories pocketed in each street heavily influence their work. The group consists of guitarist and vocalist Kline, bassist Alex Bailey, synth player Lauren Martin, and drummer Luke Pyenson—but all the songs are derived straight from the ruled pages of Kline’s journal, as she writes about disorder in her small universe held within the album.

The consumer is never going to view a piece of art in the same way as its creator. Though an artist can painstakingly try to relay messages through their work, the consumer ultimately decides how to interpret the final product. This phenomenon rings especially true when examining the career of Frank Ocean.

Many of us probably wrote music while we were locked away in our childhood bedrooms, toiling in front our computer’s webcam and scribbling down emotional poetry. Broadcasting these diary entries to an audience of just ourselves, these creative moments tend to remain tucked away as digital files and forgotten as we age. But what happens when these pieces of content become more than just pastimes for the creative teenager?

Crooning country lyrics over guitar chords taught to her by her computer repairman, a young, blue–eyed Taylor Swift moved to Nashville hoping to land a music career. Sixteen years later, endless narratives written by and about her have been broadcast across the world, plastering her with an image she cannot escape from. The serial dater, the snake, the crazy ex, the white feminist—the list goes on. How does one work to rewrite these stories everyone takes to be fact? How does one establish a sense of self when their career seems to belong to everyone else?

There's a pivotal experience that all music students can identify with: finding time between classes or other responsibilities to flock to the band room and make impromptu music. Sometimes these spontaneous bursts of creativity with friends remain just that, jam sessions that are tucked away as soon as the lunch bell rings. Sometimes they become the determinant of your career. And maybe if you pocket those moments of authentic, fluid content, you might land yourself a few studio albums (and Grammy Awards) along the way.

With teenagers decked in floral dad shirts, plastic white clips in wavy hair, and a curfew that lingers in the Tuesday night air, walking into a Summer Salt concert is exactly like what the band’s name suggests. The group of guys from Austin strive to create the perfect soundtrack for chillaxin' by the pool, according to their artist’s profile on Band Camp, where they started their journey.

Sometimes we come across a piece of literature, whether it be a line stolen from the middle of a library book or the fiction section of the New Yorker, that inadvertently resonates with us. Maybe its simplicity struck deeper than upon first glance, or it perfectly wrapped up the melancholic elegy you were reading. It is these lines that we cling to, turning them over when we let our minds wander, or carefully selecting them for our high school senior quotes. What does it mean, however, when the collection of quotes you have curated does not derive from English class, or your favorite Walt Whitman piece?

There are fewer moments more satisfying than emerging victorious after a long game of Monopoly. Gathered around the board with your colorful property cards spread in front of you like prizes, it's no surprise that a game about being financially successful has been so financially successful in popular culture. Other popular games such as Scrabble, the Game of Life, and Catan often draw us back into fond memories of being crowded around cardboard for hours. Maybe finally cleaning your childhood bedroom at home will inspire you to host game nights with as many friends as your apartment living room can hold. But, in a crowded world, do we still value board games for their inherent entertainment—or is their only value hidden in our nostalgia towards them?

Like many celebrities we direct our attention towards, Zendaya began on Disney—unlike many, she stayed there. Taking breaks to obtain runner–up on “Dancing with the Stars”, play Michelle in the latest “Spiderman” series, and appear in a Bruno Mars music video, the 22–year–old has had her hands full curating a family–friendly image for her audience.

With the sun beating on your glittered skin, the body–to–body contact in the crowds, and the colorful clothing you picked out weeks in advance, attending a music festival is a rite of passage. It's a monetary investment and emotional investment, allowing you to curate a friend group you want to experience the late–night headliners and early morning indie groups with. This past weekend, Street travelled to Dover, Delaware for one of the most anticipated music festivals of the summer: Firefly. And what happened over the course of the three days was definitely not what we expected.
