"So what are you gonna do with that degree?" is probably the bane of every English major's college career. For many people, English seems like a "risky" major. But, for some, the passion is worth the uncertainty. To these Penn students, writing is much more than something they do to fulfill academic obligations. Zoe, Amanda, Jessica and Peter are all united by not only a passion for poetry, but also an impressive publication history. Yet, despite their success on the page, all four maintain that writing, for them, is much more than just racking up publication credits.

Picture this: The weekend rolls around, you’re too incapacitated to get ready for a full brunch, but you still want something delicious to munch on. Bagels it is, then. Nothing cures the mid–semester blues like getting crafty. Sure, you could spend your time haunting the Free & For Sale page in search of a subletter, but you might as well take advantage of your room while you have it. Instead of browsing Etsy and Amazon for overpriced prints, you can easily make some of your own with a printer.

Seated on the green couches in the Starbucks commons are
five executive board members of Hack4Impact, a student–run organization that connects undergraduate programmers with socially responsible businesses
and non-profits. Taken together, the
five of them are an interesting group: all computer science majors united with a common
passion for technology, social issues and community engagement. “We’re all
different flavors of comp sci basically,” Rani Iyer (C’19) says, laughing, as
she and her fellow executive board members begin introducing themselves. The other members all nod in agreement, except
for Kasra Koushan (C’18), who smiles and interjects, “I’m pretty much just
vanilla comp sci.” As the night goes on, the pentad almost vibrates with enthusiasm
when they begin describing their roles–Rani serves as Education Chair, Kasra as
External Relation Chair, Abhinav Suri (C’19) as Project Chair, Daniel Zhang
(C’18) as Community Chair, and Nancy Wong (C’17) as the Co-Director.

Once you get off the elevator of the Stratus lounge, you’re greeted by neon lights, fire pits and an expansive view of Independence Hall. SCUE, which stands for the Student Committee for Undergraduate Education, is the oldest of the six branches of Penn student government. Although not many people know what SCUE stands for or what it does does, the committee itself boasts an impressive amount of educational reforms. Keep reading to learn about what SCUE and the members of SCUE are like both inside and outside the GBM.
