Anthony Anchelowitz came to Penn as a mechanical engineer but made the switch to cinema studies and communications, all the while juggling his many passions. He told Street about his role in the a cappella community, the most underrated spot on campus, and what every student needs to do before graduating.

It’s no secret that Penn academia can be overwhelming with its 300–person lecture halls and heavily weighted exams. These five teachers, nominated by students they have taught in the past year, help to bring the overall anxiety down a notch by creating unique and positive learning cultures in their classrooms.

It was a warm April 2017 when they started talking. By May, they had already set up an arrangement.

My experiences at Penn so far have been overwhelming. My idea of time has changed; it turned into little blocks, each with an allotted productive function, with a few stolen gaps to watch BoJack Horseman. The blank wall above my desk turned into a system of aggressive yellow Post–its detailing my to–do list, which ranged from attending resume workshops to buying razors.

On the easternmost edge of Penn’s campus is the Class of 1923 Arena. Inside the arena, above the ice rink and the seats, there’s a concrete walkway that rings around the building’s interior. Up there, there’s a little dugout with a table and internet access. That’s where Luke Mullan (C '19) sits when he commentates on the Penn Men’s Hockey club games.

If you're tired of talking about the weather this week, you should meet Danielle Goh (W '20).

This year, Penn hosted its first ever symposium on student research, bringing together Ivy League students from all disciplines to present and discuss their work. It wouldn't have been possible without Anuj Amin, symposium founder. Did we mention he's also good with a bow and arrow?

Kathryn Wilson rolls her eyes at me as we sit in Platt Student Performing Arts House. “It’s the most convenient week ever to get sick,” she laughs. She’s being sarcastic, of course. A few days later the Glee Club had their spring show—needless to say, Kathryn had been pretty busy.

Fourteen Penn students have died by suicide since 2013, and many more have said they face various issues around mental health on campus. While more resources are being made available to them, the stigma around mental illness continues to persist at this university.

When I was applying for housing last summer as an incoming freshman, I was set on one thing only: living in a single. Whether it be in the Quad, Hill, or any of the other freshman housing options, my main goal was to eat, sleep, and live alone. I witnessed classmates who I hadn’t yet met in real life scrambling for roommates on Facebook, while others chose to “go random” to let fate decide.

Behind the scenes at last weekend’s Vagina Monologues was the show’s producer Ariana Martino. Wearing a hat with the signature red V, Ariana talked about VagMons and their role on Penn’s campus.

Eva Lewis (C' 21) is all about her activism. And she's busy. At just 19, this Questbridge scholar has already been more active in politics than most full–grown adults. She started The I Project in 2015, which she calls her “baby.” It’s “an initiative to humanize youth affected by intersectionality through an activism by arts approach through community outreach.” She also started Youth for Black Lives after she and three other girls held a protest in Chicago with 3,000 people present. Their aim was “to amplify the voices of black youth.” The group is also entirely run by black femmes—something Eva is very proud of.

It took 101 days, six modes of transportation (plane, train, automobile, Korean warship, zipline, and even robot), and 8,005 torchbearers to transport the Olympic torch from Athens to Pyeongchang in time for the 2018 Winter Games. This year, one of the lucky few chosen to bear the torch was Min Jae Yoo (W ’18).

Sleep, academics, social life, landing that double axel jump flawlessly—for figure skaters at Penn, balancing it all is second nature. This week, as bedazzled athletes jump, twirl, and land triple toe–loops in PyeongChang in hopes of Olympic gold, here at Penn, 40 students are struggling to get recognition for their sport.

I will admit I initially got secondhand anxiety upon hearing Khalil Jones (C '18) describe his daily schedule as a personal fitness instructor at Pottruck Fitness Center. This is what a typical Wednesday for Khalil looks like:

Wharton. This word is charged with a multitude of different stereotypes of what Wharton students are like. Very competitive. Highly pre–professional. Probably in a GSR at this very moment. But that is definitely not the whole picture.

This week’s Egos Of The Week provide a Rihanna concert, Philz Coffee, and the Mask and Wig band to remind you of just how single you are this Valentine’s Day.

Serena Bian (C’ 18) was a sophomore when she first read the letters. She was sitting in a coffee shop and found herself sobbing in front of strangers. She’d found the Dear Penn Freshmen website, where upperclassmen upload heartfelt reflections and words of wisdom on their times at Penn.

Tell me that freshmen love doesn’t exist and I’ll send you straight to Jordy Atencia (C ‘21) and Maribel Davila (W ‘21). They’ll convert you into a believer.

College. In terms of love, it’s a term associated with meaningless hookups, Tinder, casual sex, Bumble, friends with benefits, Seeking Arrangements, and a glorification of the “no strings attached” style relationship. Then, there’s the crowd of hopeless romantics, or an increasingly larger crowd (after freshman year, at least), of people looking for long–term relationships.
