Streetscenes: He Wants to Ride His Bicycle

DONALD KLIPSTEIN

"I do a little bit of almost everything except actually make the food, but mostly what I do is deliver.... I put the people's orders on the bicycle and ride the bike to where they are.... I really like riding bikes. I'm a bike nut."

"[I started] towards the end of January '87. I was working a bicycle messenger job, and after a snowstorm that turned out to be particularly profitable for the real hard-core biker, the boss changed the delivery rule very unfavorably, and that substantially reduced the income of these hard-core bikers, and they found other jobs elsewhere, and one of them found a job here and then referred me here."

"[I ride mostly] bombers from Kmart with minimum theft value."

"I think some of the people here remember me when the weather gets bad.... Most of the students now weren't here in 1994 when we had a legendary series of ice storms.... I rode through everything that winter."

"Quite a few of the students know me by name.... I feel like a minor celebrity"
