The name "Carman's Country Kitchen" conjures up a variety of images -- most likely visions of lard, pick-up trucks and the causes of America's obesity. But if you find yourself tired of fighting the weekend crowd at Izzy and Zoe's, head down to South Philly for a pleasant -- and wholly unexpected -- surprise.

Carman's is small (no, really -- four tables and a bar), so it would probably be in your best interest to call ahead. The chef herself has become a type of neighborhood deity, attracting hordes of loyal patrons. While the hours are a bit strange (Thursday through Monday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.), fitting this gem into your hungover Sunday schedule is a must. Also, the eclectic menu changes every week, so you'll be able to try a variety of different cures for having too much fun on Saturday night.

Go into this place with an open mind. Chances are, you'll be ordering something along the lines of pancakes made with raspberries and get ready goat cheese, topped off with a chocolate/peach/hazelnut sauce ($12). Or, for the more adventurous crowd, Carman whips up an amazing breakfast sandwich which includes everything you could possibly find in the pantry, plus escargot ($13). Though the recipes may raise some eyebrows, all suspicions will be put to rest when you actually taste these slightly unconventional masterpieces. Just remember: you won't know what curry lamb sausage is like until you actually try it.

When you eat at Carman's, you are literally eating in a kitchen. The outspoken, fantastic hostess works alone behind the griddle, carrying on hysterical conversations with her guests. The coffee mugs (which are always full, thank God) look as though they came out of your grandmother's cupboard, inspirational quotes and all. Like the food, the d‚cor defines eclectic, ranging from Mardi Gras beads to a small Puerto Rican flag hanging on the fridge. Not afraid to throw their two cents into any and every conversation, Carman's two assistants top off the ambiance. Bottom line: when you're here, you're family and no one lets you forget it.
