Despite the fact that Fresh Grocer is right around the corner, Trader Joe's offers a much better selection at a more reasonable price.

Getting there: If you’re on Spruce, walk to the trolley at 37th and take it to 22nd St. If you’re on Walnut/Chestnut, take the MFL from 40th St. and switch to the trolley at 30th St. Get off at 22nd St. The entrance of Trader Joe’s can be found in the back of the enormous white building facing you as you exit the station.

Next, come prepared and make a list. Wandering into Trader Joe’s without one sets you up to leave with an empty wallet, laden with lots of random items covered in chocolate (chocolate covered edamame anyone?).

Start out by trying the free samples tucked away near the bakery. While you nosh, check out their diverse coffee selection. You can grind the fresh beans right in the store and the prices are great for what you get.

- Don’t assume everything is healthy. The sodium levels in those canned and frozen dinners are higher than you think.

- Don’t forget that TJ’s has more to offer than just food. With lots of green cleaning and bathroom supplies, you can skip your roommate’s kiwi–scented dish soap and get something more neutral.

- Do bring your own bags. Reusable bags will save the planet and make the cashiers love you. Plus, if you bring your own, you can enter a raffle to win cool stuff.

- Don’t take paper bags home in the rain. Not that we speak from personal experience, but rumor has it, it’s ill–advised.

Overall, with its wide selection and competitive prices, Trader Joe's is certainly worth the short trip.
