Can you have sex while on your period?

Short answer, yes. Having sex while on your period is often seen as gross. I know a lot of men, especially, are a little turned off by the thought of menstruation and even a lot of girls can find it unsettling. That being said, if you and your partner both want to have sex, it can happen fairly easily, especially in heterosexual sex (in lesbian situations, things can get a little more complicated).

A quick warning, while you can still do a lot of things while on your period, having your partner give you oral is usually a bad idea. Period blood is very iron rich and has a strong taste. Plus oral sex on your period is messy. So to keep your partner from looking like an extra on “True Blood,” it’s best to stick to other types of sex. Heterosexual vaginal sex is actually not a messy as you might think it would be. If it’s not the heaviest of days, some couples only have mild spotting. Having sex on your period has even been found to help with cramps and lead to a shorter period.

Here are some tips if you want to try it out. Try placing a cloth underneath you—this will help save your sheets. Also try not to ride him cowgirl tonight… let's just say gravity will not work in your favor. An important side note, condoms are especially important. While pregnancy is rare while on your period (sperm can live for a couple days in the vagina and can cause pregnancy during the return of the cycle), STIs are easily spread when blood or excess fluid is involved.

Is it okay to give men your number?  I am a girl.

Yes… I am unsure why it wouldn’t be. Are you concerned about safety? Or maybe that you’ll seem too forward? Something else maybe? I cannot think of a reason why you shouldn’t give a guy your number. I mean do you like him? Do you want him to call you? Is he not your professor? Because then I’d say go for it.

A lot of girls at Penn (and in society… yeah, I said it) expect guys to make the first move and sometimes even be a knight in shining armor or something. Some girls want guys to do crazy things in order to win their affections. Ladies, this is not a rom-com. This is college. If your guy isn’t outside your window reading poetry or setting up elaborate dates, it’s probably because he isn’t John Cusack in 1983. You have to think about a guy’s feelings. They have to be afraid of rejection. Think about if you always felt like you had to make the first move? That being said, it can be hard for girls to make the first move. This is a charged issue. Some guys are afraid of strong, confident women. If he’s afraid of a woman who knows what she wants, he’s not worth your time anyways. It can separate the boys from the men.

So yes! Give him your number if you like him. Don’t give it if you aren’t into him. It should be as simple as that and if it’s not… Give it to someone else.
