Hidden between the two main streets -- Chestnut and Spruce at 45th -- lies the hardly monumental Sam's Place. Even for the biggest proponents of West Philadelphia's BYOBs, Sam's is unique -- uniquely commonplace. During a hunt for food, a hungry Penn student might head West in hopes of finding the best place to eat that is still unspoiled by an excess of patrons. Rx, already been there. Marigold, too pricey. And Baltimore Avenue? Why not?
While Firehouse Fish Market -- located at 49th and Baltimore -- isn't exactly the ritziest locale around, its quaint neighborhood feel compensates for the lack of frills. Residing in a former firehouse, the Firehouse Fish Market boasts of a lot more than just fish. While it does command a fresh bounty of seafood options both for immediate consumption and for cooking, its vendors also sell fresh produce, baked goods, teas and coffees. If you like the Green Line Caf‚ down the street, you'll find a small excerpt from the caf‚ represented at Firehouse with caf‚-made pastries and drinks. Although the produce is fresh, the prices match those of Freshgrocer, making a journey just for produce -- for lack of a better word -- fruitless. The meats are reasonably priced and sure to be well-appreciated by any meat-lover. Firehouse also sells spices and random sauces for anyone advanced beyond the wonderful world of Easy Mac.
From the guys who brought you Penn's beloved Palladium, Abbraccio (Italian for hug) touches upon Italian favorites with a mark of creativity. Palladium dessert favorites -- the Chocolate West Philadelphia and Apple Crisp -- are the only menu items surviving the restaurant change. The entrees -- offering pork, beef, chicken and vegetarian dishes -- are so flavorful that they overshadow the standard pasta plates. Located just south of Baltimore Avenue on 47th Street, Abbraccio boasts a beautiful building of tasteful d‚cor, alfresco dining and a well-lit parking lot directly behind the restaurant. A new favorite of the neighborhood, Abbracio has a special section designated just for families.
