M. Night Shyamalan’s Split is no new concept. The world of cinema is saturated with successful films about multiple personality disorder, including movies like Fight Club, Psycho and Primal Fear. And while James McAvoy puts on a amazing and convincing performance as Kevin Wendell Crumb and his 23 other personalities, Split failed to confirm the hype surrounding the trailer and M. Night Shyamalan's supposed comeback.

As consumers of film, we often wonder how it all gets put together. Take La La Land, for example. How did this director find these actors to make this film, with this set and this musical score? There are a lot of intricate, moving parts.

On Wednesday night, October 26, the Undergraduate Media and Entertainment club (UME) and business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi (AKPsi) began their Media and Entertainment Week. Media and Entertainment Week is a week–long conference that provides Penn students who might be interested in the multiple facets of the entertainment industry an opportunity to learn more about the roles and jobs that are offered to them. Through information sessions and alumni panels, Media and Entertainment Week clarifies how to get involved in a world that does not seem easily accessible on Penn’s campus.

The Philadelphia Film Festival on October 20, with a screening of Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, brought with it a wide variety of films both old and new to diversify your movie palette. To kick off the festival, I decided to catch one of the classics they screened for the section called “From the Vault,” which encourages viewers to see some earlier cinematic works in which some contemporary film contributors have a hand.

While many of us imagine study abroad filled with only good food and good times, the story of Amanda Knox is one to remember. When Knox, age 20 at the time, studied abroad in Perugia, Italy, her only worry was how she would change during her time abroad. What she didn’t account for was being a suspect in the murder of her roommate and subsequently subjected to becoming the face of one of the most infamous trials of the century.

Netflix became a television force to be reckoned with once it began creating its own original content. One of its most successful shows, Narcos, just released its newest season and was also renewed for two more seasons. As a fan of the show, I was elated to hear that the historical remake would continue past the death of Pablo Escobar (Should I have said spoiler alert? Are there people who don’t know Pablo Escobar was killed? Weird.), but there was also some critical speculation as to whether this was a good idea on Netflix’s part. A show about Pablo Escobar and the narcos of the 1980s without Pablo Escobar? What could possibly be the next move for the show?

One might think movies about
Apollo 11 landing on the moon
in the 1960s could 1) be extremely
expensive to produce (Ed.
note: Because recreating realistic
space stuff ain’t cheap) and 2) have
been done way too many times
before. Operation Avalanche, however,
is the first narrative, quasi–
documentary that tackles both
obstacles with a new, innovative
twist: Secretly filming a movie inside
of NASA about NASA scientists
of the 1960s secretly filming
a fake moon landing. Street spoke
to director/actor Matt Johnson
and producer Matt Miller about
Operation Avalanche and their
controversial filming tactics.

As pre–professional as Penn’s campus can be at times, there are also many creatives on campus. Film and TV suffered the hell that was the Student Activities Fair and visited the Kelly Writers House Activities Fair to give you a concise guide on how to get involved with the coolest film clubs and companies on campus.

Ah yes, the back–to–school film genre—not just for tweens who think they’ll be lucky enough to switch places with their popstar doppelgängers
(Ed note: every Disney movie ever). Really, we’re here to get you on track and in the back–to–school mood more than buying textbooks and
reading syllabi ever could.

While you all were out on your exotic vacations instagramming your açai bowls, Film and TV did the hard work for you and rounded up the movies and TV shows you need to see in order to end the most perfect summer ever (or at least to help nurse your last hangover before move–in drama). We know settling into a new semester at Penn can be hectic, so turn to this list when you need some sanity amidst the back–to–school craziness.
