Now that this weird summer–fall hybrid seems to have finally given way to just straight up cold weather, it’s time to bring out those warm boots and sweaters that have been in the back of your closet since last year.

When I found out This Is The Kit were performing in Philly this week I moved around my entire schedule so that I could make it to the show. I first heard This is The Kit my sophomore year and immediately knew I had happened on something special. The subdued melancholy on her 2015 album title track “Bashed Out” felt introspective, but not stale or trite. I was completely struck by the strange, lovely juxtaposition of the song’s weighty lyrics and the lilting gentleness of the vocals. For a long time after, my Spotify habits have been dominated by This Is the Kit’s discography, each song holding something of the specialness I felt when I initially heard her voice.

I don’t know how to do my taxes, and I’m still shit at using an iron, but I get excited about grocery shopping, so I’m pretty sure that means I’m an adult. To clarify, I don’t get excited about just any grocery shopping. I get pumped about Trader Joe’s. Here are a few reasons why:

A confession: when I think of taking care of myself I always think of the Parks and Recreation “Treat Yo Self” school of self–care. You know, the one day a year you’re supposed to bathe yourself in champagne and get fed grapes and all that jazz.

It’s the first week of classes and you are feeling GOOD. Like really, really good. You’ve made it a personal goal to actually eat breakfast before your 9 am recitations, and you’ve decided that for once you’re going to actually show face at all your lectures this semester. No, wait. Shoot for the stars. You’re going to be five minutes early to all your lectures this semester. This campus is your oyster. The opportunities are endless. This year is going to be different, dammit.

Maybe you’re meeting up with your friends from high school to finally take that road trip to Cali you guys all promised to do when you were 14. Maybe you’re just bored and looking for somewhere to go before that job starts. Maybe you’re crossing the country because that guy on Tinder was just that hot and this could be fate! (It’s not.) I don’t know your life.

No matter how cool you think you are, you’re at Penn; chances are you were probably kind of a nerd when you were younger. You lived for every Eragon book, you were front in line at each Harry Potter midnight premiere and you killed it at your local library's summer reading program. Hey, it’s okay. I did, too. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed that fewer and fewer of my peers really read for pleasure anymore. Sure, as college students we still read a lot. I have friends who have binged
Atlas Shrugged or begrudgingly read and re-read all of Homer time and time again. But it’s all to finish that paper or cram for a final.

Nostalgia isn’t a bad thing. But it doesn’t hurt to try something new every once and awhile. Street took the music you jammed out to at uncomfortable middle school dances or listened to broodingly during that period when you kept a diary for a couple months in 8th grade and we found the bands you should be listening to now. We know you were such a complicated pre-teen but take some advice and discover some new favorite tunes for your post-braces life.

If Valentine’s Day isn’t enough of a reminder that everyone around you is in a relationship, there’s nothing like a playlist of charming duets to really drive that singleness home. But don’t feel too jaded. Whether you’ve got a special someone or not, two is most definitely better than one.

Sorry to break it to you, but the sweet, sweet ignorant bliss of the first few weeks of the semester are over, and all of a sudden, you actually have to buy textbooks and attempt to write that paper you pretended didn’t exist while you were playing in the snow (read: drinking inside and watching the snow).
