In a era of big budget remakes and sequels, (can you say Rocky 6?) Spike Lee's new joint, Inside Man, is a welcome puff of fresh air. After a daring daylight bank heist turns into a hostage situation, the NYPD calls in negotiator Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) to save the day. Frazier however, soon finds out that he is merely a pawn in an elaborate scheme heading by the cunning bank robber Dalton Russell (Clive Owen) to execute the "perfect" bank heist. As the film unfolds, the real depth and magnitude of the plot is revealed to be more then just a simple bank heist, when a mysterious political strong-arm (Jodie Foster), adds an unseen twist that had implications beyond a classic stick-up. It's the originality in the story, and the unexpected twists and turns that will keep the audience genuinely puzzled till the very end.
Coming on the heels of recent Hollywood biopics such as Ray and The Aviator comes Walk the Line, the heartwarming story of the man, not the legend, that is Johnny Cash. Joaquin Phoenix (who played a uber-Amish guy in The Village) stars as "The Man in Black" in a story of sex, drugs and country music. The film, which has one of the best opening scenes in cinema this year, follows the life story of Johnny Cash from his childhood discovery of music to his struggle with love and drugs as a country music superstar. At the center of the film is a beautiful tale about the Cash's relationships with June Carter and his father.
What results from combining The Sixth Sense and Fight Club and then subtracting the good acting and violence? Crap. Stay follows the story of a depressed art student, Henry (Ryan Gosling), as his suicidal tendencies lead the audience on a wild goose chase to a surprise ending. Ewan McGregor plays Sam Foster, a New York psychologist who attempts to unravel Henry's mind and past in an attempt to keep him from diving off the top of the Brooklyn Bridge. With the help of his also-suicidal girlfriend Lila (Naomi Watts), Sam attempts to discover why Henry is pulling a Haley Joel Osment and whether the lad is Brad Pitt or Edward Norton from Fight Club.
