Nestled between a series of shops, grocers and hairdressers on 17th and Sansom, Petulia’s Folly hardly belongs in the dark alley in which it is located. The soft colors and warm scents of the store lend an inviting atmosphere to the women’s boutique.

Upon our arrival to Old City on a rainy Wednesday evening, we were immediately welcomed by Chloe’s charming storefront and warm lighting that peeked out from the inside. The adorable BYO is inviting from the start, with kitschy decorations and a small space that instantly makes you feel like you’ve been here before. The restaurant has been owned and operated by married-couple chefs Mary Ann Ferrie and Dan Grimes since 2001. Chloe offers New American cuisine made with fresh, local ingredients and served in the heartiest portions Philadelphia has to offer.

Sailor Jerry’s name is painfully appropriate. Walk into the boutique and you will be greeted by blaring music, octopus-shaped chandeliers and oversized plastic fish mounted on the wall.

Going to school in an urban environment like good ol’ Philly satisfies many a desire, offering art museums, happening restaurants and establishments for dancing our asses off. One thing not included on this list? Mother Nature. April 19, however, we Philadelphians can have our cake and eat it too thanks to the annual Macy’s Flower Show.

Growing up, rainy days typically meant a trip to the movies or a lazy day spent in bed. On special occasions, however, we would travel to the local do-it-yourself pottery place. Channeling our creative skills, we would decorate floral wall hangings, ceramic frogs and oversized coffee mugs with our best friends (and, of course, parental supervision).
The Expressive Hand, located off of South Street, conjures up such memories. Offering family fun for all ages, the paint-your-own pottery studio also offers classes in clay and American sign language, as well as birthday parties. For those of you who don’t know the routine, customers select from hundreds of pieces of pottery (ranging in price from $5-$60), and decorate it to their liking. Once finished, customers leave their creations behind to be glazed and fired, ready for pick up a week later. The Expressive Hand even offers improvements to the system, providing curbside pick-up for your pottery as long as you call ahead.
Rainy days in Philadelphia are depressing enough. So next time the skies turn gray, try basking in the warmth of nostalgia and make something pretty.

Sometimes simple is exactly what you need, and Audrey Claire (20th and Spruce St.) delivers just that. This Mediterranean BYOB is stripped of all superfluous decoration; white walls, an open kitchen and scantily clad wooden tabletops dominate the scene. While this effect runs the risk of looking stark, the gregarious crowd and bustling staff compensate for the lack of décor. Even place settings are given the simplicity treatment. Wine is sipped from juice glasses and dishes are served on plain white plates reminiscent of a local diner. Although the restaurant’s dedication to a simple design does little to stimulate the eye, it serves well to highlight the food and accentuate the sophisticated intimacy of this neighborhood haunt.

If Penn has taught us anything, it’s that college students will never turn down an excuse to party. This Friday, the ICA Student Advisory Council is hosting a yearly benefit to support the ICA. And in true contemporary art fashion, this year’s theme is “Fifteen Minutes of Fame,” as per Andy Warhol’s infamous quote. Drinks and desserts will be provided, as will the musical stylings of Street's own DJ Lips. So come decked out in your best cocktail attire, and remember not to let the fame get to your head.

Amidst the uncertainty and ambiguity that accompanies every new year, there is one constant we can always count on. As redundant or annoying as these shows may be, we can’t help but love them in all their glamorous and superficial glory. And the upcoming award shows are...
