Campus Life

Ego Of The Week: Michelle Newman

Don’t be fooled; this College senior may be deceptively cute, but she’ll kick your ass. Michelle Newman lead Women’s Rugby to victory last semester as forwards captain, while simultaneously orchestrating the most succesful Charitable Laughter in recent history.

Cleanse Yourself

Street sent one of its own on a mission to look fab and feel hip by performing the less than popular “body cleanse.” By detoxing and purifying his body wih a special diet, Jake Blum goes on the journey used to lose weight … and bowel control. If you’re going to cleanse, make sure you have a toilet within a fifty-foot radius.

Back In Black(Berry)

You know that Ego of the Week question, “There are two types of people at Penn …”? Well, after a little social experiment I took part in these past couple of weeks, I would divide Penn into BlackBerry users and everyone else. It’s no surprise that smartphones took over campus long ago, but I didn’t realize the ubiquity of the BlackBerry in particular until I suddenly found myself without.

Ego Of The Week: Freddy Wexler

Penn’s most famous almost-grad, Freddy Wexler, is a singer-songwriter hitting the big time (he's worked with everyone from Maroon 5 to Lady Gaga...WHAT?!). When all your friends back home start pining over this hunky (and somewhat taciturn) musician, remember, Street clued you in first. Street: What don’t most people know about you? FW: I’m a momma’s boy. Street: There are two types of people at Penn, those who__ and those who___? FW: Those who do Steak Queen, and those who do Bui’s. Street: Last purchase? FW: The domain name: www.thenumb3rs.com Street: Any guilty pleasures? FW: Eating my girlfriend’s vegan food.

Adventure Behind The Walls

A pre-Halloween visit to Eastern State Penitentiary’s Terror Behind the Walls, the annual haunted attraction replete with zombie performers and fog machines galore, is practically a rite of passage for Penn students.

Horsin' Around

The Fabric Horse, a darling sewing workshop-cum-boutique in Northern Liberties, may have only opened its doors just this past May, but its eponymous carryall-accessory brand, with its iconic singer-headed horse logo, has been a local favorite for several years.

I Survived Fraternity Rush Week

I’ll probably throw up if I hear about another four-story beer bong.

A Forgotten Dream?

If I had a nickel for every time a Penn student complained that classes started the week before Martin Luther King Day, I could stop using BURSAR.

Ego Of The Week: Alex Mack

Alex Mack used to be just an ordinary teenage girl, living with her parents and older sister in Paradise Valley.

Claire's Accessories

The go-to shop for all the hippest ladies, Claire’s is a longtime favorite for adding spunk to our step.

Ego of the Week: Joe Luchtan

Street: Who would win in a celebrity tag-team match between the UA/Class Boards and SAE/IFC? Joe Luchtan: Sadly, it’d be a stalemate.

My Blackest Friday

I’ll admit it: I love Black Friday. Not for the deals, although they can be quite impressive. In my family, Black Friday is an adventure in retail.

Get Your Om On

If you’re ever walking past Distrito, glance up through the glass windows. There you will find a fleet of yogis, decked out in Lululemon and lycra, flipping their dogs.

Rescue Spa

It’s official: stressful reading days will soon replace the crisp, carefree days of fall. Luckily we’ve found something to take the edge off.

Speaking Out

When I was a freshman, my Intro to Sociology professor began a lecture with the following question: “By a show of hands, how many of you agree with the statement ‘I am a feminist?’” In a room of over 100 students, only three hands went up.

Ego Of The Week: Melissa and Tanya Pavri

Twins Melissa and Tanya Pavri have infiltrated almost every extracurricular Penn has to offer. After four years of campus-wide recognition, they finally have their say in Street. Street: Between the two of you, how many groups are you involved in?

Swine '09

I didn’t go to class last week. A disclaimer: I’m not one of those people — the kind who view lectures and seminars as obstacles to “experiencing college.” I love my classes.

The Long Walk Home

If, like me, you are silly and female, then you most likely walk home alone in the dead of the West Philadelphian night.
